In the U.S., it was anti-Catholic.
It was anti-"Papist". Most of the people of pre-and post-Revolutionary war in the coastal South were Scots-Irish, or Protestant Scots from Northern Ireland. The Scots-Irish were given a strong, anti-Catholic message by Oliver Cromwell.
The original "Closed Circle Society of the Horse Masters" was simply known as the Ku Klux (Greek for closed circle) Society.
The cross burning did originate in Scotland, but not for racial purposes, Scotland did not have Blacks to fear. But they did have the English to worry about and great distances, from Lowland to Highland, to communicate English invasion. The Scots erected many cross's on prominent hills that could be seen at distance. When the alarm was "sounded", the horizontal arms of the cross would be draped with animal fat soaked rags and lit to signal the Clans to gather to repel the English. In America its use was corrupted to that of a symbol of terror rather than a call to unity. Too bad.

Yes. Although I blame the crooked politicians and apathetic voters of recent times that are the more appropriate culprits.
So the Fugitive Slave Act passed by Southerners and Democrats that allowed Federal Marshals to force private citizens, against their will and under pain of imprisonment, to track down run away slaves was what the Founders wanted? Was the Dred Scott decision, by a Southern Democrat controlled Supreme Court which for the first time allowed the Federal Government to define who could or could not be a citizen of a state and allowed the federal courts to overturn personal liberty laws in the states what the founders wanted?
Your silly characterization of Lincoln as some great satin who single-handedly destroyed a perfect state and lead us into a totalitarian government show that your knowledge of history is on the comic book level. You have no comprehension of the events that lead to the Civil War and obviously no knowledge of exactly when the Federal government really did begin consistently overstepping the bounds that the founders intended. That transition took place long after Lincoln was gone and it was sadly done with the consent and support of the majority of the American people. We always get the government that we deserve.
You blindly accept anything thrown at you by the neo-confederate propagandists and do not bother to question it by looking for original sources.
