A few fragments of the glorious dream that is America come to mind especially as we are still reeling from the terrorist attacks of 9/11. We are starting to realize how many people in the rest of the world wish us ill. And we realize from the cruel example of Iraq just how hard it is to start a democratic republic on the ashes of despotism.

"Ben Stein gets it right."

Yes he does. And during his stint as a judge on the TV series Star Search, he took every opportunity to mention our brave men and women serving in Iraq. His patriotism always got big applause.

"Of course, let's be happy — but also grateful. Our laughter is made possible by the blood of heroes. As we smile on this summer day, let's remember them and the dreams they and their families lost so we could have ours come true."

Amen.

I have ALWAYS liked Ben Stein.

From "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" to "Win Ben Stein's Money" he has always struck me as thoughtful, humble and a true gentleman. Class act!
