NEW DELHI: With Sino-India ties on an upswing, especially after Prime Minister Vajpayee's "successful" visit to China, the two countries now plan to hold the first-ever joint exercise between their navies later this year.

Navy vice-chief Vice Admiral John DeSilva, speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to flag in a naval mountaineering expedition on Friday, said a three-day search and rescue exercise was being planned in which warships from the two countries would take part...

In recent months, India has commenced "some cooperation" with the Chinese People's Liberation Army. With the thaw in relations, for instance, Indian and Chinese warships have been exchanging port calls with each other. There has also been some officer-level exchanges in each other's military institutions.

I have no doubts that we will be there, silently observing and "taking notes".

Nope...I never figured I would have to re-write this part in the least, even if we make significant gains in the near future.

china is there and growing rapidly...towards either critical mass and self sufficeincy (the premise of the novels) or towards over-extension and collpase. Will depned a lot on us and I don't see us making progress towards the latter.

India will have to take China into account and how we treat and cozy up to China will, in many ways, determine how India positions itself.

The U.S. may well have observers on board...I hope we do.

I know we will have observers below the surface.

I believe most of the impetus for this seeming Sino - Indian thaw came, SIGNIFICANTLY, from the Chinese side.

Agreed...and the exact premise of the Dragon's Fury Series.

Together, they are over 2 billion people. Alliances today are like shifting sand and these are the top 2 countries getting outsourced jobs from our high-tech manufacturing and IT. Hard to believe that there are U.S. Senators who want to outsource DoD projects now.

Yep.

If those 2.2 billion people are ever used as the pool to form a massive military effort against us, using high tech military hardware in quantity...particularly when our manufacturing, engineering and high tech development base has been located on their shores...that's a very bad picture.

Thats the scenario of my series.

I agree with you - this may have some repercussions for us. A recent cover story in The Economist about China and India says Pakistan is once again the preferred ally there. The article goes on to comment that Indians should be getting over their fear of China and patch up relationships!

Indians should be getting over their fear of China and patch up relationships!

There's a growing sentiment there like that...and I bet I know who's behind it, let's see, who would that be?

Same folks that padded Clinton's coffers for Technology Exchanges and the like.

It is disconcerting...but I believe, given our own shinning up to Pakistan and the PRC, it is predictable.

We should be going all out to befriend India and set them up as the counter balance to China and the Islamics IMHO.. a wedge right between them. They have the population, the technology and they are much more aligned with us ideologically than the other two, despite the continued caste system overtones.

We give Pakistan a $3 billion handout and India talks nice to China. Coincidence?

Thanks to Kosovo the Russians were able to get India and China to begin to form a counter alliance. Those who followed events in the Balkans-Kosovo warned of this but few listened. Now many here will be suprised when they should not be...

Been talking about it myself via my published series for sometime myself.
