One pleasure of every Presidential election season is that there is always a surprise. This year's biggest so far is Howard Dean, the former Vermont Governor who has become the most consequential Democrat challenging President Bush.

Yesterday Mr. Dean formally "announced" his entrance into a race he's been running for months. Dismissed at first as a lefty from a small state, he has risen in the polls by tapping into the strong anti-Bush mood of core Democratic voters. In the process he's yanking the entire Democratic field to the left.

Readers of these columns won't be surprised to learn that we doubt this is a winning platform.

The danger for the Democrats in 2004 is that they will indulge their outraged inner liberal...no one should discount Mr. Dean's chances of pulling a George McGovern.

Woof! Be still, my hopeful heart! Do I hear candidates who will promise to strip America of an able self-defense, who will promise each citizen a check for, perhaps, $1,000?

Do I see, as through a miasma of dimly-perceiving liberal agendas, an electoral and popular landslide?

He isn't merely conservative, he's a "radical" who is "dismantling the New Deal." The Bush EPA wants "to put more pollution into the air," and his tax cut is denying health care for kids.

Typical liberal - angry, arrogant, loud, and flat out wrong! Russert did a good job of letting the air out of that wind bag. I wonder how he will handle the rest.

Oh yea, and don’t forget to call the local demoncrap party headquarters and ask them the following before the primary election:

1. Can I get a ride to the polls – help them spend their money during the primaries so they’ll have less during the national election. Have them take you the scenic route and stop off and do some shopping on the way home.
2. Are you giving anything away free for voting democrat? Cigarettes, box of cigars, box lunch, etc. Ask for two of each.
3. Send 25 cents in the mail to the DNC and watch how much they spend on mailing you to give to the party. Always send their solicitation back to them with all associated literature in the prepaid envelope included in the mailing. They have to pay that postage upon return. Great way to help them spend money and keep you up to date on their propaganda.

The echo is that of the convention-grabbing, puffing-youthful-anger movement of 1972. It is the hollow sound of the McGovern disaster, an epic flood of nonsense that I had thought caused the Demorat party to reform its procedural rules to prevent any possible repeat of that wonderful night.

Oh, what a time that was, and I am to be blessed, apparently, with yet another enthralling evening of Demorat disaster. Oh, sigh and swoon! That I should be so privileged to live to see another cycle of liberal Demorat self-immolation!

Laugh all you want at Dean, but he's extremely dangerous.

He's consolidating all of the fringe left-wing supporters who otherwise would vote Green party or stay home.

Dean doesn't have the phonyness and baggage of a Klintonian/New Democrat and he doesn't have the crassness of the old Democratic liberalism like Mondale did.

He's a pure, unapologetic liberal who's comfortable in his beliefs.

Dean is the first canidate who I have ever seen, who is hostile to centerists and moderates. People that are in the middle of the road, do not dislike George W. Bush, they do have doubts about his policies though, and are wishy washy in his decisions, they do however seem to personally like him.

Dean is living in a different reality along with his base, they just assume, that unless your a right wing extremist, you hate Bush. If you do not hate Bush personally, then your a right wing radical and all the insults that come with it. This is not the way to get the moderate voters, and portraying yourself as an extremist (as dean is choosing to do for some odd reason) is not going to get him elected, and as the DNC is concerned, may cost the party big time in the general election in regards to congressional elections.

He's also telegenic and well-spoken. However, I was surprised to see in clips on TV this morning that he is not a tall guy.

And you're right. He is dangerous. Why? Because he is an outright, unapologetic Leftist who has a good chance of getting the nomination. Should Dean become the Dem nominee and something occur to weaken President Bush's reelection chances, Dean could become to the nation what Gray Davis and the Dem legislature are to California.

Dean is still fighting an uphill battle. He needs to do well Iowa, where Gephart has the clear advantage. If Dean doesn't win NH, his campaign is likely finished, and Kerry will be strong there, especially with his regional ties.

OTOH, Dean has passionate supporters everywhere, which cannot be said of any other current Dem candidate.

There's a huge difference between the two. Alan keyes appealed strictly to conservatives, that was the base and thats who he went for.

Dean mocks the people in the center, and tosses them into the radical right category.

Its one thing to appeal to your base, and use issues they want to hear to get there votes, its quite another to attack everyone else who is not in your base. Keyes never acted like those in the middle were liberals, he believed he could appeal to the base and that moderates would be drawn also by the same issues, but he didn't attack them, he attacked liberals. Dean attacks conservatives, and moderates since it appears he can't tell the two apart.
