PAX AND AAP TEAM UP AGAIN TO SEND CRITICAL SUMMER SAFETY MESSAGE TO PARENTS: ASK IF THERE ARE GUNS WHERE YOUR CHILDREN PLAY

New York, NY (June 20, 2003) - Each year over 3,000 children in the United States lose their lives to gun violence. In response, PAX – Real Solutions to Gun Violence and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), created the ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Campaign, a life-saving campaign that urges parents to ASK if there are guns in the homes where their children play. “The fact is, over 40 percent of homes with children in America have guns, almost half of which are left unlocked or loaded,” said PAX Co-founder Daniel Gross, whose younger brother was critically injured in the 1997 shooting atop the Empire State Building. “Asking about guns where children play is something every parent can do to make their child safer,” said Gross.

National ASK Day is taking place Saturday, June 21, 2003, the first day of summer—a time of year when children will be playing more often in other homes. Special events are being held in dozens of communities nationwide, including Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Durham, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Providence, Seattle and Tampa. Statewide awareness drives will also be launched in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington.

To strongly reinforce National ASK Day activities, the AAP is sending an important safety message to all parents and pediatricians: ask if there are guns where children play. “The message of the ASK Campaign is an important one to include when talking to parents about safety," said AAP President E. Stephen Edwards, MD, FAAP. “Many pediatricians have seen firsthand the tragic outcomes of firearm injuries to children,” continued Dr. Edwards.

Ask to make sure that your child can strip, clean, assemble, load, and get a nice grouping when he fires the gun.

Each year over 3,000 children in the United States lose their lives to gun violence.

How many of them are 16 and 17 year-old gang bangers who are conveniently defined as "children?"

Keep in mind, next time you go clothes shopping, that "Pax" is funded in part the Levis company.

And that Wranglers are better-made anyway.

Their money would be much better spent to fund Eddie Eagle programs.

I wish a school system in a major city would implement the Eddie Eagle program for a few years, and see what happens. I'll bet it would be a positive thing.

The only thing that bothers me about guns in other peoples homes, is that although my children know how to act around guns, etc. I am sure not every parent takes the time to educate their children about gun safety. Of course, living in mid GA most households have at least one hunter, so I guess actually a lot of them do.

If kids knew gun safety (Eddie Eagle program) there would be no need to ask anyone anything about guns in their homes.

Funny you should ask.  As it happens, the CDC, of all people, have a great web-based frontend to their M&M database.  If I did this right, all of the links in the graphic should work, so you can go check it out for yourself.  If not, here's the link, without the fancy HTML, which you can cut and paste into your browser.

"I wish a school system in a major city would implement the Eddie Eagle program..."

I'm sure this does happen. However, the liberal press will NOT publicize it.

But -- what happens when there is an accident at one of these "safety" courses: the liberal press puts it on the front page as "yet another" example of how guns might just go off by themselves, even if they're handled by a supposed pro.

Actually, most gun-grabbing organizations set the cutoff age at 19, so they can include all those 18-year-old gang-banging "children".

And of course it doesn't help matters that liberals constantly harangue gun-owning parents to keep their guns hidden away from their kids. That's just begging for them to find it on their own, without guidance.
