Muslim group threatens to kill the Pope
Jerusalem Post ^ | Jun. 7, 2003 | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Croatia's state-run news agency HINA reported Friday that it and a Croatian Catholic news agency had received e-mails threatening to kill Pope John Paul II "in the name of Allah."

The e-mails, signed by the "Islamic Front of el-Mujahadeen" and addressed to "the infidels," appeared to have originated in neighboring Bosnia, said Interior Ministry spokeswoman Zinka Bardic.

She said Croatian and international police agencies were investigating, but that there was no danger to the pontiff because of the heavy security around him.

Papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters aboard the pope's plane Saturday that the Vatican receives such threats "from time to time" and turns them over to local authorities.

He indicated there would be no changes in the pope's schedule in Croatia.

John Paul was holding a Mass on Saturday in Osijek, just over the border from predominantly Orthodox Serbia. Organizers were preparing for up to 200,000 pilgrims from Croatia and Serbia as well as neighboring Bosnia and Hungary.

God willing, they will try and fail.
Perhaps this will wake up what had been Christendom.

The religion of Peace!

Unfortunately, there are more than a few Freepers who would join the Muslims for this.

Pray for il Papa.

It was only a matter of time before this "target" was on their plate. I am a little surprised this hasn't come up sooner. What is the world coming to?????

Actually there was an attempt on the Pope's life some years back. Oh, maybe you meant by muslims. I don't know who was responsible for the other attempt.

I'm not Catholic but I don't want any harm to come to the Pope. I haven't noticed the anti-Catholocism that you imply.

This may not be representative of a religion of peace, but these people make up for it by being stupid. John Paul's looks to be in such health as to be not long for this Vale of Tears, anyway.

It's impossible to exaggerate the depravity of someone suggesting killing is the name of God.

I am not Catholic either, and may disagree with many of the Pope's leanings and teachings, but he realy is a cool guy, who deserves a lot of respect. He speaks countless languages, and though he looks to be at Death's door, drags his poor old carcass all over the globe, without a thought to his own comfort or well being. I think he is a saintly man in any sense of the term.

Were the Muslims to kill this now-suffering selfless good old man, it would be the most dangerous and self-destructive thing they could do.

Religion of Peace advocates would be left dumb, with nothing to say. The act would be so indefensible, so revolting, so nauseating to most of civilization, that in many countries it could well spell a Crusade.

Or lynchings. Whatever it takes.

This may be but I would nuke Mecca/Medina light years before I would nuke the Vatican and the Vatican is no friend of Israel. (I know what a light year is)

You aren't seeing the same threads I see. In the past 6 months, every time someone posted anything about Vatican announcements about the war in Iraq, some idiot ends up posting some comment about why doesnt the Pope forget about the war and clean up his "pedophiles". Like as if he were personally responsible for the sickminded and depraved who would hurt any child. Believe me, the Catholic haters are out there and using FR.

What a disgusting thing to post.. just because there are people who vehemently disagree with Catholics on matters of religion does NOT mean they would want someone murdered.. good heavens..

While there is certainly room for debate on the handling of the Catholic Church's problems with the priesthood here in the U.S., I don't think any of those people have advocated anything like this. This smacks of comparing Jerry Falwell to murderous Islamic radicals, and reflects very poorly on those who make those kinds of comparisons. And BTW, I am neither Catholic, nor an adherent of Falwell.
