"Ha. Fooled the colicky little wretch."

LOL! I'm having warm memories of my own five 'wretches', including a set of twins, that my wife nursed in the '70s.

I wish those 'wretches' would get with the grand-children program! I'm getting tired of waiting. ;^)

They actually have milk banks where women donate breastmilk for babies who are sick/premature and need it most.

The milk at human milk banks is also pasteurized, just like cow's milk.

I am very pro-breastfeeding...nursed both my boys. But I was extremely careful about what I put in my body during that time. It is a bodily fluid, after all. If someone put their bodily fluids in my child's mouth, I would be extremely hacked off. The "public decency" has nothing to do with it, imo...it's the health aspects of it that would get me. Sure, people used to do it, in the olden days, but that was before we knew how viruses are transmitted.

Viruses can be passed through breast milk though I can't recall any of my children getting ill at all during the time they were breastfeeding. It is very uncommon. Breast milk sort of inoculates babies from the germs around.

I have held quite a few breastfeeding babies that were not my own, and they have an instinct. There is a smell to breastfeeding women that babies catch a whiff of, and they start rooting. I can't believe this woman did what she did, and it is sort of gross sounding to me. However, rich women weren't the only women to do the wet nurse thing. Even poor women who were ill might have someone act as a wet nurse. I believe I've heard a story about my husband's grandmother or greatgrandmother who kept her milk flowin', so she could help out any young mother who needed it. Some women just have a hard time nursing, and there was no magic formula to do the trick. The old pros saw/see nursing as a necessity for life.

"Please keep me abreast of any new developments on the busted woman."

This is a highly titillating development, but one that I think we'll have to nip.

What? You think it's okay for a stranger to breastfeed a baby?

Sure it beats the stranger cow's milk processed by some chemical corporation. Haven't you heard about wet nurses ?

This woman should should be rewarded for doing the favor to the child.

"The real outrage here is that a 3-month old baby is in a daycare at all.

Daycare is a liberal's term for child storage."

Gee, how did I know this idiocy would come up.

Once again, some mothers are single whether by choice or not and they have to work. Either that or go on welfare, which I've heard somewhere on this forum is a really big no-no and shouldn't even exist. Some couples make so little money that they both have to work. Gee, I even know conservatives whose children go to day care (mine have off and on and are very well adjusted and feel very loved, thank you) and liberals whose children do not. Imagine that!!!

Despite your rationalization, it's still child storage.

On the other hand, this has nothing to do with decency, this is a potential health endangerment issue.

I agree.

A woman I know has two kids. When she was pregnant with the first, she said of breastfeeding, "That's sick! A little baby sucking on your titty! It perverted. Gross!" I have always thought that she was the one who was sick about that, having so profoundly inverted the natural and the perverse that she would be so vehemently apalled.

On the other hand, times are changing, and while I see nothing indecent about what the day-care lady did(in fact it was a very nice thing to do, I think), this is one of those things that you just can't do anymore.

Milk is a "body fluid" and exchanging body fluids with children in your care is not something that should be allowed at a day care center, in light of the reality that we are living in a post-AIDS/herpes/etc... world.

I would expect some explicit, signed parental consent and waiver should do, for those who would like their child's day care to operate in a way that allows brestfeeding. Some people might be willing to pay a premium rate for such a service, under the right circumstances.

My sister-in-law got so into it with the pumping/freezing thing, she stockpiled mountains of little baggies. Between that and the "mice cubes" for their reptiles, you didn't want to look in their freezer.

I agree with you that parental consent is a must for this sort of thing. And some folks might pay big $$$.

I'm quite amazed, however, that women are allowed to have babies at all, much less breastfeed, in this disease-ridden world. They might have herpes or AIDS! Daycare centers are quite the breeding ground for viruses. As are schools. And grocery store carts. And public restrooms. Etc. lol

I second that. The Earth should be purged of this polution. Nuke all humans and sterilise the remains. Or at least drag them to the court!

We must preserve purity of our precious bodily fluids

If they outlaw breast-feeding, only outlaws will have breasts.

I dunno why but I just sprayed the keyboard over that one, dude...

"I believe I've heard a story about my husband's grandmother or greatgrandmother who kept her milk flowin', so she could help out any young mother who needed it."

What a wonderful woman to do something like that! I would consider it an honor to do something like that for mothers who are sick and still want their babies breastfed or just have to work and have no other choice but formula. Unfortunately, society here in the US wouldn't allow women to do such an honorable thing without heavy backlash. This is one area our society needs to work on because it truly is superior to formula. There are way too many people in the US who get offended by seeing a woman breastfeeding in public and doctors (of all people) who push formula on new mothers the first sign of a problem. I have nothing against women who choose not to breastfeed because if you do it and don't want to then you will just end up resentful in the end and it would become a chore. But I've met too many women who really wanted to stick with it but had problems that could've be easily worked through and their doctor pushed formula at them. Of course they assumed the doctor knew best and switched. It seems to be catching on slowly though and becoming the in thing to do again. I hope the trend continues.

How about a bit of pregnancy/breastfeeding/baby humor to this thread for those of us who've been there, done that (curtesy of breastfeeding.com):

Q. What is the most common pregnancy craving?
A. For men to be the ones who get pregnant.
Q. My husband and I are very attractive. I'm sure our baby will be beautiful enough for commercials. Whom should I contact about this?
A. Your therapist.

Q. I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A. With any luck, right after he finishes college.

Q. How will I know if my vomiting is morning sickness or the flu?
A. If it's the flu, you'll get better.

Q. My brother tells me that since my husband has a big nose, and genes for big noses are dominant, my baby will have a big nose as well. Is this true?
A. The odds are greater that your brother will have a fat lip.

Q. Since I became pregnant, My breasts, rear end, and even my feet have grown. Is there anything that gets smaller during pregnancy?
A. Yes, your bladder.

Q. The more pregnant I get, the more often strangers smile at me. Why?
A. Because you're fatter then they are.

Q. Will I love my dog less when the baby is born?
A. No, but your husband might get on your nerves.

Q. What's the difference between a nine-months pregnant woman and a Playboy centerfold?
A. Nothing, if the pregnant woman's husband knows what's good for him.

Q. My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A. Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q. When is the best time to get an epidural?
A. Right after you find out your pregnant.

Q. I'm modest. Once I'm in the hospital to deliver, who will see me in that delicate position?
A. Authorized personnel only---doctors, nurses, orderlies, photographers, florists, cleaning crews, journalists, etc.

Q. Does labor cause hemorrhoids?
A. Labor causes anything you want to blame it for.

Q. Where is the best place to store breast milk?
A. In your breasts.

Q. Is there a safe alternative to breast pumps?
A. Yes, baby lips.

Q. How does one sanitize nipples?
A. Bathe daily and wear a clean bra. It beats boiling them in a saucepan.

Q. What are the terrible twos?
A. Your breasts after baby stops nursing cold turkey.

Q. What is the grasp reflex?
A. The reaction of new father's when he sees new mother's breasts.

Q. Can a mother get pregnant while nursing?
A. Yes, but it's much easier if she removes the baby from her breast and puts him to sleep first.

Q. What happens to disposable diapers after they're thrown away?
A. They are stored in a silo in the Midwest, in the event of global chemical warfare.

Q. What causes baby blues?
A. Tanned, hard-bodied bimbos.

Q. What is colic?
A. A reminder for new parents to use birth control.
