Okla. Woman Faces Breast-Feeding Charge

STIGLER, Okla. (AP) -- A woman was charged with breast-feeding someone else's baby at a daycare center without the parents' knowledge.

Prosecutors charged Shannon Denney, 32, with outraging public decency and public morals, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $500 fine.

Denney, whose own child attended the daycare center, apparently decided to help out one day in late November or early December by breast-feeding a 3-month-old girl, authorities said.

"The baby was crying and they were feeding it a bottle and that didn't stop it," prosecutor Ron Boyer said.

The mother found out months later when a rumor circulated around the town of 2,500, he said.

"It got back to the mother," Boyer said. "The mother confronted the woman and asked her about it and she admitted that it happened."

After the alleged incident, Denney bought the daycare center, but she has since closed it. She did not immediately return a call Tuesday.

The state Department of Human Services, which licenses daycare centers, has no policy on breast-feeding someone else's child.

"It's a commonsense sort of thing," department spokesman George Johnson said. "It's something that today you don't even think about."

Viruses can be transmitted through breast milk.

Allowing a strange women to breast feed you child is the start down a slipery slope. What's next... milk from a cow?

What? You think it's okay for a stranger to breastfeed a baby?

You can find it at http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_510616.html?menu=news.latestheadlines

I didn't want to post it outright, as I'm not certain what the, um, appendage guidelines are here.

How does this work -

does a woman have to have a kid in order to breast feed? and how long does it last? does it turn off one day?

In the past, wealthy women would employ "wet nurses" to breastfeed their children...they wouldnt even consider doing it themselves...how times have changed.

Still, with all the diseases out there today, no way would I let someone else breastfeed my baby (if I had one).

You have a point with the 'stranger' aspect of this case.

I recall that women in a ranching area I lived in in the '70s would occasionally feed each other's babies.

Certainly, no one thought ill of it, or was even discomfited.

I can see why the mother would be upset, but where is the prosecutor getting the 'outraging public decency' idea ?

That seems a tad 'clenched' to me.

I'm with you. I don't like the 'stranger' aspect either, but if people want it to be illegal, they should pass a law. Generic laws like 'outraging public decency' make things into crimes only after the fact and are extremely dangerous. (Imagine some democrat saying that attending a Freeper rally is 'outraging public decency'.)

That is wrong on so many levels.
If that woman had breast fed my baby she would have more worries than one year in orison and $500in fines.

The real outrage here is that a 3-month old baby is in a daycare at all.

If the child didn't get ill (Viruses can be transmitted through breast milk), this is ridiculous, imho . . .
