Was her left lower leg missing? Could be Scaughty didn't want this to be used to ID her. Too bad he isn't more savvy about forensic evidence.

Last night, a search warrant was served at the Peterson residence. The focus of the search warrant was to attempt to locate evidence of any activity before or after Laci's disappearance and evidence of a stranger intrusion

So he had from 8:30 on the 23rd until the night of the 26th to "clean up."
