If you're contention is that receiving a sponsor exemption is earning a spot, then there is no further need for debate. I disagree with the premise.

Yes, that is my contention. As long as there are sponsor exemptions, then I think whoever gets them has earned being there. And leaving it as a disagreement is fine.
