HSLDA ^ | May 15, 2003 | Ian Slatter

Posted on 05/16/2003 5:19:14 AM PDT by Kentucky

HSLDA Staff Attorney Scott Somerville, accompanied by his eldest daughter, Christy, will be appearing today, Friday, May 16, on DaySide with Linda Vester. This new show from the Fox News Channel discusses issues in a talk-show format and airs at 1:00 p.m. ET. Friday's subject will be the growth of homeschooling and why so many parents are turning to this method of education. Scott Somerville will inform viewers about the motivations of homeschool families and present the effective results of homeschooling. Homeschooled from kindergarten through grade 12, Christy Somerville will also be in the studio and may get an opportunity to share her perspective as a homeschool graduate and college freshman. Please pray for Scott and Christy as they travel to New York for this opportunity. Over the 10 years Scott Somerville has been an attorney with Home School Legal Defense Association, he has handled hundreds of legal contacts on behalf of homeschooling families across the United States. Scott and his wife, Marcia, home educated their three oldest children through graduation and continue teaching the three youngest at home in Derwood, Maryland.

Sincerely,

Ian Slatter Director of Media Relations

Please keep the cubical-bound informed. I'd love to get paraphrases of what he says. Thanks.

HSLDA is a valuable organization, but I am getting really tired of their continuous bashing of the homeschool curriculum I chose to use (K12).

Which one is that? I didn't realize that HSLDA spoke out for or against curricula.

We use Bill Bennett's K12 curriculum. K12 also works with various states to start "Virtual Charter" public schools using the curriculum. HSLDA mistakenly believes that K12 is trying to undermine homeschooling by doing this. All they are doing is offering a choice to parents. If the parent chooses this path rather than pure homeschooling it is their own business.

Incidentally, it also provides competition to the public school establishment.

Choice and competition will force our public schools to improve, and I believe even HSLDA agrees with that. Yet when that competition and choice is there in this form they speak against it.

My desire for children to get a quality education does not stop at the end of my driveway.

Are you watching FoxNews? They just gave a statistic that 72% of homeschoolers cheat.

I think it said 72% of students surveyed, not particulary homeschoolers. Unless that was a later part of the show. I saw/heard most of it while browsing.

I tried watching the new DaySide show. Sorry, Fox. It's as big a snoozer as Pat Sajak's weekend cuppa warm milk.

Thanks for explaining this. It's the first I'd heard of it.
