Why Do Conservatives So Quickly Abandon Their Own?
Cathryn Crawford

Posted on 05/04/2003 8:57:27 PM PDT by Cathryn Crawford

Isn't it true that a lot of the bashing of Bill Bennett is simply due to the fact that conservatives naturally rejoice in the misfortunes of their own? The ability of the conservative movement to abandon their own people when they are even slightly attacked by the liberal/media establishment is absolutely astounding.

Why are conservatives so quick to judge their own? Are we afraid? Are we so afraid of being tainted by a scandal that we will so easily turn away at the first sight of blood?

This is a serious and long-term issue among conservatives that deserves to be adressed.

Yes I know...

btw....we are having multiple tornados around Nasville now...don't yet know about damage but it's been steady rolling thunder, heavy rain and continuous lightning since about 11PM CDT.

Wade is freaked out. Mommy is freaked out and cranky anyhow...lol.

Thomas would sleep thru Dresden. Fortunately Mondays are not office days for me. I expect the power to go out any second. Glad I live way up on a hillside in steep country.

I had NO hopes for him ( having read a bit about him, during the Lott mess ) and he's lived up to that expectation and then some. Will he EVER " get it " ? I don't know. He's already wrecked more than enough havoc.

Not offhand.

I'm a Mississippi native from way back. Been here for 6 years. Live down in Forest Hills down Granny White Pike (Laurel Ridge) about a mile north of the Williamson County line....the knob behind Shy's Hill of WBTS fame.

I'm gonna look up Palmer though. My wife is a local. My folks moved up here in the late 70s when I was at Ole Miss. I came here when my dad was terminal...lots of family stuff in the air and I'm the eldest...well...you get the picture.

I know what you mean. Conservatives eat their own.

Maybe this is because liberals taste so bad.

Conservatives expect more from their representatives and hold them accountable to a higher standard. Liberals are 1) more interested in the spoils of politics, winning and losing, getting and spending and 2) more convinced of their own inherent moral superiority. If a liberal politician, bureaucrat, journalist or judge carries water for the team and helps it to win that is enough for them.

And if something does go wrong with one of their politicians liberals won't attack or condemn him until things are very bad indeed. There's more party or faction discipline and control on their side. Many scruples get sacrificed to party unity and factional solidarity. Also, liberal gaffes and blunders don't attract the press attention that conservative ones do. Then, too, Democrats have learned through experience not to make the kind of unguarded remarks that got Lott and Santorum in trouble.

Finally, we saw in the Clinton years that it's presumed that liberals don't make claims about sexual morality. Therefore, conservatives who run afoul of moral rules are attacked as hypocrites and liberals aren't, since it's assumed that they don't claim to be moral in sexual matters. Every Republican is assumed to be a minister who's claimed to be a saint, and every Democrat is assumed to be a (loveable) scoundrel from whom nothing better can be expected. This argument is itself a form of hypocrisy that allows liberals to take down even a liberal Republican like Packwood and defend Democrats like Kennedy, Dodd and Kerry for behaving in similar fashion. Curiously, liberal hypocrisy on financial concerns isn't assailed particularly strongly, though it's arguable that liberals do make claims to be more moral about money and wealth than conservatives.

But if you are going to write or edit a "Book of Virtues" (or have one written under your name), you'd better keep your nose clean.

Of course. I did Jackson Prep 1975.....duck hunted the Delta...still deer hunt around Port Gibson. Jackson raised. First West Jackson then moved to the Northeast when West Jackson started in it's East St Louis style decline...and Dad got some chips.

I am so Mississippian that I reek of cottonseed oil. If you are from there...you cannot deny it. It's a badge...you can hide in shame or you can revel in it....lol...guess which aspect I embrace...lol

Almost all my kin are still there in Jackson and the Delta (Yazoo) and some of the old folks even down around Sullivan's Hollow.

From what I understand the crime families just keep it under wraps. They still own most cacions. My brother in law in Vegas was a bit shaddy and one day claimed they were owned by the mafia and any others that tried to get in were pushed out. I could be wrong but I doubt it.
