3,000 children a day is just frightening (and seems a bit high): but we're worried about SARS? Yes, SARS can kill and is fairly infectious, but so is malaria.

Malaria's old hat. You need a flashy acronym to catch on with the public these days.

Malaria doesn't have the ability to travel by plane to Toronto. It's isn't how many are killed, it's WHO is being killed.

I guess it's better that these poor people die than we start using DDT again. Another victory for the Greens.

The sad thing is that DDT could reduce the number of deaths due to malaria by about 98%. But since the envirowackos have managed to use junk science to outlaw it, mosquitos are more important than humans.

We would cut off aid if they did. Sad but true.

Ever since the envirals got DDT banned, the equivalent of 10 super passenger jets crashing and killing all on board each day, has been happening. That has been the daily death toll for malaria in a year after the ban on DDT.

This is just part of the ethnic cleansing of evil humans policies of the enviral facists.

Nothing to worry about, these are only poor people from poor third world countries. (Sarcasm off!)

It's isn't how many are killed, it's WHO is being killed.

You sure nailed that one. There's a difference between first-world deaths and third-world deaths.

Reversing your comment:

Malaria doesn't have the ability to travel by plane to Toronto.

Actually, it does. Someone infected with malaria can come to the States or Canada easily. If they're bitten by the right type of mosquito (which do exist in the States), it can be transmitted to other folks. Toronto may be north of the mosquito's existence range, though, but a lot of the U.S. continental range isn't.

In fact, this happened last summer in Loudoun County, Virginia, just south of me (on the other side of the Potomac River).

Two Cases of Malaria Confirmed in Eastern Loudoun County

The difference is (right now, at least) - malaria can be treated better than SARS. But drug-resistant malaria is a concern.

Don't they use DDT?

It seems to me that it is still allowed in some regions. But I'm not sure.

I read somewhere that the funding for one of the malaria programs is up for review, hence the sudden burst of scare stories.

That's why I said Toronto - it's outside the normal range of malaria. The East Coast is another story - Washington DC was a malarial swamp until they replaced one species of bloodsuckers with another...

Or a sign that reads "Ripe for Takeover by Despots". In a CIA report that came out in 2000, which chillingly provided a general prediction of the 9/11 attacks, the instability of the economies of several African nations due to AIDS deaths was considered a major national security concern. Malaria is killing the kids and AIDS is killing the young adults; they are losing their workforce. It's definitely a problem to reckon with.

And the media, tiring of SARS since it's obviously being brought under control everywhere but China, has focused on a new possbile panic source.

The 3000 children a day number must be fiction so I wouldn't sweat that one. And malaria isn't directly infectious, you cannot catch it from a person ever, it's a hopper via mesquitos. A couple ships full of raid should take care of the problem in short order.
