Bush allows PLO's American offices to remain open [GIVE ME A BREAK]
Jerusalem Post ^ | Apr. 17, 2003 | JANINE ZACHARIA

Posted on 04/17/2003 1:11:10 PM PDT by yonif

US President George W. Bush invoked a national security waiver on Wednesday to prevent sanctions from being levied on the PLO for a period of six months.

Under the Foreign Relations Act of 2003, PLO non-compliance with signed peace accords and continued use of terror and violence would force the president to impose at least one of a menu of sanctions unless he invokes a waiver contained in the law.

President Bush's decision to waive sanctions on the PLO comes as his administration plans to try to jumpstart the dormant Middle East peace process.

If they are our friends, why did we have to REQUEST it? Would the US government sell M-16's to the PLO or to the Syrians?

We let China into the WTO, and sell them LOTS of dual use items, and allow US companies to move high tech manufacturing facilities to China, doing technology transfer. It's hard to look at that relationship and gather that the US administration takes China seriously as a threat, in comparison to say, our relationship with Iran, NK, or Cuba.

Can you guess which country votes identically with the US more than any other country in the UN? Hint, it isn't Britain, Canada, or Mexico.

In any event, a comparison of the Palestinian issue to Iraq or Afghanistan is invalid on its face, because neither of those situations directly involved Israel.

So us Americans have to reach down and grab our ankles for the Israelis? Not in my life time.

With rare exceptions, acts of terrorism by the PLO have not been directed towards Americans. Achille Lauro was done by PLF, an offshoot of PLO.

Yeah, nothing except blown up and shot US citizens, hijacked airliners in the 70's, and two dead US diplomats, at least one by Arafats personal order.

I wouldn't make the assumption that their past is any reliable guide to how they will react to Americans in the future. One can also say that prior to 9/11 terrorists had never attempted to crash hijacked planes into buildings in an American city, yet it would have been wrong to conclude that, therefore, we were in no danger.

I would be more concerned by the fact that the PLO/PA terrorists may regard us as an ally of Israel (which, of course, we are and rightly so). My concern is that they have a ready capacity to commit acts of terrorism against us, regardless of how often or seldom they have exercised that capacity against us in the past.

What Pollard stole was intelligence about neighboring Arab countries that the US, under a previous agreement, should have been providing to Israel, but wasn't.

Hardly, he gave up frequencies, codes, methods & techniques, and he gave up the names of human intelligence that we had in Russia. Many of whom were executed by the Russians. We dont OWE squat to Israel. We trade with them but we dont owe them anything, especially if it means endangering US interests. Frankly I wouldnt trust them much more than I would Chirac and his Vichy II group.

You are making a mistake by your statement. Israel is the greatest ally the US ever had. I will say no more...

Thank God. To do so would only embarrass you more.

The King David hotel was a British military base at the time, making it a legitimate target.

And what army was Menachin Begin a proud member? Oh yeah it was a street gang masquarading as freedom fighters. Tell you what, how about all the Jews that originally lived in Israel stay and let all the Euros go back to the country of their origin.

It was particularly real swell of them to turn back Nazi death camp refugees by the boatload during the war

You mean like we and virtually every other country in the world they tried did?

How many times has China invaded the US since 1948?

Who are we. the US, more likely to have to fight in the coming Century? Saudi ARabia, Jordon, Egypt or China. I say China but you, looking at it from your Israel first perspective, say the arab countries.

Menachin Begin was a terrorist wanted by the British Government.

They said the same thing about George Washington, if you recall

Funny, Washington and his troops wore uniforms and fought on the battlefield with muskets and canon, they didnt hide behind women and children and set bombs like a common PLO type, Menachin Begin.

just like the Mossad could if we forced Israel into an agreement they didnt like. Hell they've fired on our ships and theyve sold our secrets to our enemies.

The USS Liberty was an accident. I am not going to go into it again, as there was a big thread a few months ago.

Let's talk about what this is about - PLO offices.

BZZZT. Wrong. Not all of the continential militias were uniformed, and they fought using guerilla tactics while the Brits lined up in the style of the day. The East Coast of the US is huge and has forests to hide in, while Israel is a tiny desert, with nowhere to hide. Also, as soon as the state of Israel was founded, the first thing they did was outlaw the militias, and even sunk a ship of Irgun which tried to smuggle in their own weapons, because of the belief that Israel could have only one military, and not lots of little paramilitaries.

I'd like to share with the group a mail that Despicable Dave sent me, as it shows where he's coming from.
