Bush allows PLO's American offices to remain open [GIVE ME A BREAK]
Jerusalem Post ^ | Apr. 17, 2003 | JANINE ZACHARIA

Posted on 04/17/2003 1:11:10 PM PDT by yonif

US President George W. Bush invoked a national security waiver on Wednesday to prevent sanctions from being levied on the PLO for a period of six months.

Under the Foreign Relations Act of 2003, PLO non-compliance with signed peace accords and continued use of terror and violence would force the president to impose at least one of a menu of sanctions unless he invokes a waiver contained in the law.

President Bush's decision to waive sanctions on the PLO comes as his administration plans to try to jumpstart the dormant Middle East peace process.

Lets watch the games begin at the UN.

Hope you like the performance.

Then why do you think "the Americans won't let them?"

Sorry, but this is just an excuse. I'm telling you: the Israelis don't WANT to capture Arafat, and they don't WANT him dead. He is more useful to them alive, as a focus of hate for the Israeli public and Israel-Firsters here in the U.S.

CLINTON is the guy who was buddy-buddy with Arafat. Bush has largely ignored him.

We just scragged Saddam. We'll kill or capture any of these people, and we don't care what the "Arab street" has to say about it, and we don't complain when the Israelis do the same.

The only time Israel gets in trouble is when they kill and injure civilians needlessly, as they often do.

I guess you don't remember the many times the US State Dept. went out and said that Israel should "restrain" herself. I remember much of that was said when Israel surronded his compound in Ramallah.

Before jumping on Bush, how about we wait to see what the whole plan is.

My intent was not to jump on Bush. In fact, I fully trust his judgment in this matter, but I was curious as to what was driving it in this particular case. I have since received some pretty good responses that make good sense to me.

Israel does not target civilians, it targets terrorists. Most of the civilian deaths occur because they are used as human shields by the terrorists. The terrorists also operate within their areas.

So far, Mr. Bush has shown us every reason why we should trust him. I'm willing to do so on this account, as well.

And FWIW, Bush has done more for Israeli security in the past month than all the other Presidents before him. Why not give him credit, instead of p*ssing and moaning all the time, you Israel-sycophants?

I fully agree with everything you say here except for the last sentence after the word "credit." I was just curious, that's all.

Why are you so enamoured of Israel, and so contemptuous of the United States, and yet you continue to live here? Is it that you're cowards, and don't want to deal with the terror "over there?"

You need to relax and take a deep breath. I fully support Bush, and fully trust his judgment in this case. I was simply curious, and since asking my question I have received plenty of intelligent responses that make sense.

Well, the most popular explanation here seems to be to keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. I'm not totally sure that I am convinced by this response, but I do trust Bush's judgment in this matter and am therefore willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm piggy-backing off your post. If my reply doesn't fit your views, then they don't apply to you.

There are plenty to whom they DO apply, though, believe me.

They don't target civilians, they just don't particularly care if they are inconvenienced in any way.

I have friends who've experienced it, believe me.

We should crush, kill, and destroy our IMMEDIATE violent enemies, to be sure (as we are doing). As for the rest of the violent enemies, keeping them close, as at the end of the barrel of an M1A1 tank works for me. As for the "non-violent" enemies, of course other means will suffice. For example, cancelling all PURCHASES from France would seem to make sense.

I regret this waiver. It sends a wrong message about terrorism. Shame on President Bush.

The Bush administration has also said that in rebuilding its police and security forces, the PA must reform them so they fight against terrorists instead of taking part in terrorism.

And they are cleary not doing so, and under the current "leadership" they will not do so, and so the entire "peace plan" is a sham. There will be no peace until the thuggish Pali "leadership" has been decimated and the population has been beaten into submission. IMO, of course.

Amidst the whiners -- the president HAS already changed two terrorist regimes! I don't think this president is th appeasing type, but that's just my opinion.

Not sure who you're calling a whiner. Not folks here on this discussion board who are simply having a discussion, I hope.

In any event, a comparison of the Palestinian issue to Iraq or Afghanistan is invalid on its face, because neither of those situations directly involved Israel.

MM out. Have a great night.

What Pollard stole was intelligence about neighboring Arab countries that the US, under a previous agreement, should have been providing to Israel, but wasn't.

Howlin, you can shove your ad hominem ASSault right up your.... Never mind.

Illbay, when you say THOSE people and use the actions of one person to shade an entire group of people, that's called being a bigot.

Spare me on the uberpatriot thing, I am not buying it.

Next time you talk to me, tighten that rubberband chinstrap on your tinfoil hat, first.

Illbay, it would be enlightening to hear your interpretation of the history that led to Israel recieving foreign aid.

Also, can you quote even one media source quoting an administration official threatening to cut off aid? "Unnamed sources" don't count, either.

Keep tightening that chinstrap, buddy.
