Bush allows PLO's American offices to remain open [GIVE ME A BREAK]
Jerusalem Post ^ | Apr. 17, 2003 | JANINE ZACHARIA

Posted on 04/17/2003 1:11:10 PM PDT by yonif

US President George W. Bush invoked a national security waiver on Wednesday to prevent sanctions from being levied on the PLO for a period of six months.

Under the Foreign Relations Act of 2003, PLO non-compliance with signed peace accords and continued use of terror and violence would force the president to impose at least one of a menu of sanctions unless he invokes a waiver contained in the law.

President Bush's decision to waive sanctions on the PLO comes as his administration plans to try to jumpstart the dormant Middle East peace process.

Yes, the PLO support terrorists, just as the Irgun once were.

Menachem Begin, who killed dozens of British (not to mention a few Arab bystanders), later became PM.

Again, what's your point?

Shut down the PLO terrorist front groups like CAIR and the AMC. ..........

Bush is doing surgery. It's better to aim one's lasers at the tumors, rather than destroy the entire patient. The PLO is merely a symptom, not the cause.

He will deal with the PLO at a time of his own choosing. My guess is that the Admin is looking to remove the PLO's funding sources first, which means the PLO will be the LAST to go. After Syria and Saudi are taken care of, the PLO may just dry up and blow away. It may work...

I agree. This is unconscionable to me for Bush to do this. Sometimes you simply have to stand on your principles. Besides, I don't buy that this is some kind of brilliant logistical move. I think it's appeasement for the sake of maintaining the pretense that peace is possible, that this "roadmap" is going to work. It's not going to work. It cannot possibly work because the Palestinians' goal has been, is, and will always be the utter destruction of Israel, period. For anyone who doesn't believe this, just do a bit of digging. You'll find that they state it openly and unequivocally on a very regular basis.

This is a bad move on Bush's part.

This office has been an invaluable resource for anti-terrorist surveillance and terrorist act prevention. KEEP it open. Till the PLO is either wiped out, or completely replaced with another defacto "pro western regime"... with the same name...

I also believe that the president's goal is to replace the PLO "leadership" with another regime that is pro western". He must feel that if he waives santions on the PLO at this point in time, then somehow the regime change will come about faster.

Is he correct -- I don't know. I do know that admists the whiners -- the president HAS already changed two terrorist regimes!

You obviously need to brush up on your history.

Good grief. Everybody knows that.

I do NOT think they will EVER agree to any type of agreement that recognizes Israel's right to exist.

I disagree. I think that even Republicans don't give this administration credit on foreign pocily. Anything is possible with the right blend of the "carrot and stick." This administration and GWB I believe have the winning formula. We got it all. Good cop, bad cop Rummy, Powell, Rice, wild cards and GWB at the top. The Arabs know not to f**k with GWB. And you know.. I believe they will respect that.. GWB understands middle-eastern culture better then any of the pinki liberals you see babbling on CNN. It's a very masculine culture, and they repect a show of force. They know that GWB is not a bluffer. We'll get some thing accomplished over there this go around...

You remember the Soviet Union? They were OUR enemy, not Israel's enemy, and that's why Israel chose to sell our classified documents to them, that they had gotten through Jonathan Pollard. Prove it.

Never mind. You most certainly are not worth the trouble. You are not only clueless, you may very well be hopeless.

the PLO is an Islamic Terrorist organization ... the "keep your enemies closer" crowd should think about opening an office for Osama bin Laden and Al Quaeda in Washington, D.C., then ... makes as much sense ... [/sarcasm]

throw out the PLO, now!

I hope you're right; we certainly have everything we might need going our way. Or is it their way?

I have my doubts though.

Sure you talk to them. You may be able to change their minds. Just make sure your weapons are cleaned and reloaded while you're talking...

Like Ronald Reagan said, " Trust, but verify."

Hmmm... a second chance to spell "amidst".

Amidst the whiners -- the president HAS already changed two terrorist regimes! I don't think this president is th appeasing type, but that's just my opinion.

Aren't we hoping that the *new* PM will win his battle with that arafat person? He needs to have the power and authority to appoint his own Cabinet. MUST clean up the corruption, put a serious halt to the mad bombers, etc.

They do nothing about Arafat, because the US won't let them.

I believe I read that somewhere, but couldn't remember the facts, so I didn't post it.

Didn't Bush say something about him having to have REAL power, not just be a rubber stamp?

Pollard is an Israeli citizen. He made aliya. Furthermore, the reason many people want him free is because when one looks upon those who spied against the US, they got a far less punishment.
