[history]
For several months, the United Nations has been at the center of sharp public and diplomatic debate over how best to disarm Iraq and ensure international security. In the process, the U.N. has been called everything from indispensable to irrelevant. Come what may, it is in the global and American interest to prevent the current crisis and its associated rhetoric from undermining the United Nations as a platform for peace, collective security and common progress.

"We do not need the UN in its present form"
We don't need the UN in any form!
Get US out of the UN and the UN out of the US!
It should never have been allowed to exist. It was formed by communists for communists and the charter was written by an american communist, Alger Hiss!

agreed.
The UN is jeleous of the US and will do much to see that we do not get exactly what we want/need. In other words what is right for our country.

Anyone want to bet that we will continually stay in the corrupt institution forever? Also before GW ends his presidency that we will see amnesty for the illegals (Mexicans). Have you seen what the government has done to the guy in Arizona who runs the Tombstone Tumbleweed newspaper & what might be to our demise if the Patriot Act is passed, considering what they are currently doing to him presently?

Vomit Alert- Hurl incoming!
"After two world wars, the U.N. was created to prevent a third. The record is clear: The U.N. has performed this function and served the purpose of global peace with great success. It is imperative we not allow the current disagreements among countries to be confused by the uninitiated or twisted by the vengeful to destroy the long-term viability and health of the United Nations." The UN's take on humanitarian aid is about 80%. Their peacekeepers (as witnessed in southern Lebanon, always leave when asked to by warring parties.) There biggest sin is that they just take up space and resources.

"The UN only is a forum where international agreements are hammered out. No enforcing capabiliy. Those allowed to vote have weighted vote based upon several factors, such as economic strength, population, and influence(leaves France out on all counts)." I watched Dennis Miller on HBO this weekend. His suggestion for France was hilarious. He said that Bush should lay a pipeline from Iraq to the Eiffel Tower, stand at the base of it with his hat and cowboy boots on, and yell yahoo! at the world's tallest oil well!

"Why U.N. is Needed?"
It's not, unless China gets mad at the U.S. Then we might wish we had it. But, I forget, we have Great Britain on our side. That ought to scare them.

While watching the Iraqi ambassador to the U.N. being interviewed leaving or arriving at his residence in New York City, I noticed his residence. It's in the very rich section of Manhattan. I'll bet my life savings that all these dudes live on Fifth or Park Avenue. They dine in fine restaurants and completely enjoy all the splended enjoyments of New York City. This, and only this, is why the U.N. exists. President Bush says that the U.N. will be useful in distributing food, etc. to Iraq. I don't believe the U.N. can even do this. Saddam was taking the food and storing it - not giving it to the Iraqi people who needed it. As a New York City friend says, on 9/11 the planes should have flown into the U.N. building.

"The U.N. has performed this function and served the purpose of global peace with great success." Yeah, sure Tim. Just look at the rousing successes in Rwanda and Bosnia.
BTW Timmy, you were an eco-fascist at one time. Why should we believe you now?

Worthless Wirth still whoring and shilling for the UN. If the UN goes away, he has no job.

Timothy E. Wirth, a former Democratic member of the U.S. Senate from Colorado, is president of the United Nations Foundation. Says it all right there. Major job security going on here ... but it, like the disgusting institution this global wannabe is defending ... will fail, as well it should.
To: Jeff Head
Grampa Jeff, I beat you by a couple of seconds.
This was such a obvious shill/con for Wirth's job security, you and I could smell the stink from where we live.

We smelled it clear over here ... and it was so powerful we smelled it at the same time, several hundred miles apart ... and the stench was moving UPWIND too!
To: Jeff Head
I, also, have a bad case of Nasal Congestion and still smelled it hundreds of miles away and upwind.
These left wing whackos can't get by with this anymore.
It gets on the internet, then talk radio and then Fox News. Then, they look like the fools they are.

Classic post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. There has also not been a world war since the invention of the miracle bra, saran wrap, transistor radios, or Scooby Doo. You're wrong, the real reason for eliminating world wars is the tinfoil hat I have been wearing now for 42 years. Only problem is, I'm afraid to take it off in case a world war starts.
