LOL - I heard they were cutting out pieces of carpet from the Sheraton hotel... I guess they're out to reconstruct their homes before they refurnish them. Unless of course the gold stuff is hidden under their clothes so it's not looted back from them.
Use your imagination... the door is an ideal item on which to stack all the stuff you are going to cart away. A good size door can turn even a lawn mower chassis into an expansive trailer, and even without wheels to put it on, a door can be used as a "loot stretcher" when carried between two men.
Plus, doors are not so easy to make and an attractive one adds to the feng shui of the home. A good sturdy one is not only a nice addition to the decor- it's a good barrier to have in a lawless area full of looters who might want to get into your house, too.
Speaking of doors....
Back in East St. Louis there were always problems with looters stealing not little wood doors, but entire flood gates. They would strip those heavy steel flood gates right off the levees and no one seemed to notice- until there was a big flood. Then everyone got flooded out and the press spewed out nonsense about the flood gates not working, when in truth the flood gates in question simply weren't there!
Most folks believe the thief was a previous mayor, since he wasn't known for his honesty and he had the heavy equipment needed - as well as a bevy of willing city workers and loyal democrats- to haul those things down to the recycling plant.
And every housing project known has had problems with people taking the cables and bars from elevators out of spanking new buildings and slipping them to the recyclers for cash.
That said, it would be fun to watch some Iraqis pay a visit to the UN HQ in NY.
