Cameras look a lot like rifles. They're black, round, they have lenses, and they're aimed.
Reporters in the Holy Land have learned not to slink behind Israeli units taking shots.

I understand .. but he made it sound like maybe the commander didn't really hear any shots fire ..

These guys are in the military .. I'm guessing they KNOW what a gun shot sounds like

They don't need to know what is sounds like. Their opiticals show them what it looks like. They can practically see through walls.

There's no way a tank commander would have heard a gun shot from that distance. He's 'shuttered-up' inside a tank with the engine running. The gunner and commander are making quick judgements on danger through their viewing scopes.

Bottom line for these cameramen and journalists....this isn't a f***ing football match you're filming. If a tank gunner in the heat of battle happens to catch a guy looking at him through what looks like a anti-tank weapon scope from a rooftop or balcony, he's gonna take the shot. And he should.
