A thousand Muslims held prayers in a public square in Copenhagen in protest at the war in Iraq (news - web sites), despite an attempt to sabotage the event by unidentified individuals dumping manure in the square.
"Democracy and the United Nations (news - web sites) have failed. So this is a prayer for peace," Tanwir Ahmed, organizer of the prayer at the town hall square in the Danish capital, told Reuters.
Manure was poured on the central Raadhuspladsen ahead of the event Friday, but municipal staff cleaned it up to let the Muslims lay out their prayer mats.
Police said nobody had claimed responsibility for the sabotage attempt.
Less than three percent of Denmark's 5.3 million citizens are Muslims, but recent years have seen an increase in support for the openly anti-immigrant, far-right Danish People's Party. The government relies on the party for a majority in parliament.
About 20 young people calling themselves Pukers4Peace emptied the plaza in front of the Federal Building with a street performance -- of induced vomiting."Militarism makes me sick," said Don Abbott, a Contra Costa College journalism student who headed the group. "Puking is the most disgusting display of emotion that is still legal. We've gotten flack from other protesters, but we are past trying to appeal to people's sensibilities."
The group splattered its message between 7 and 10 a.m., but pools of vomit still covered much of the plaza at mid-afternoon. Everyone who came within yards reeled away, fingers on noses.
"My puddle is the longest-lasting one," proudly declared Lauren Errea, a UC- Berkeley student. <\blockquote><\i> This is old news but worth remembering. The depth of their stupidity is mind-boggling to behold.
Like sand in the gears Fast-moving demonstrators shut down S.F., frustrate cops
Again, old news but still amusing how leftists shut down the capital of leftism.
It (the manure truck) appears regularly at the U.N. headquarters in NY without such fanfare.
I hope it was pig manure.
