Is it really so hard for Burns to say that the Iraqi leadership is desperate, pathetic, and lying?

Burns has been terrific. He's been the only redeeming thing at the NY Times during this whole affair.

When writing in Baghdad, yes. People who speak the truth in that manner get tossed into meat grinders.

But Burns is obviously mocking the leadership in his nuanced, understated way, showing how Saddam's goon squad has lost the plot. He is walking a fine line between giving an accurate report, or getting thrown out (or worse).

Yes, if he wants to live. Don't let his "New York Times" affiliation fool you. I have listened to many reports from Baghdad by Burns, and he is on our side. He is one of the good guys.
