***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 5 - LIVE THREAD***
Everywhere! | 23 Mar 2003 | An.American.Expatriate

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

To all who helped this get started, thank you!

Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

If you have (had) money, you could go. Those who stayed behind were either poor or protecting their assets. Many of them just shipped their store stocks out. Iraqi's get rations from the food programs and those last about 30 days.

1-10 weeks to take Baghdad? Gee, that's specific!

Yeah, he really went out on limb there. Well, at least it appears he thinks we will win. He is usually such a doom and gloomer.

Well, thank you for the compliment!

I would also like to suggest that it is obvious why there have been no refugees:

We have been told repeatedly that there are two rings of Republican Guards surrounding Baghdad, along with the WALL OF FIRE from the burning oil in trenches. I believe this is self-explanatory.

Jim Rubin on Beeb analyzing the American reaction to seeing POW. BeebBabe tried to get him to say that seeing this would weaken our resolve.

The last period of weakened resolve came out of Somolia. That weakened resolve was NOT from the boots on the ground, but from the dud in the Oval Office.

The boots on the ground in Iraq still have the resolve. The major difference is, the dude in the Oval Office also has the resolve also. A whole different thing now, than then.

NPR news had a lefty gravely intonong - the iraqi leader warned that the coalition forces will be brought into the cities to be defeated in urban warfare - as if everything were going exactly to Saddam's plans. She sounded like she was describing Hitler. I think the true lefties (ClintonKissers) really believe that.

I've been watching you guys drooling over her all weekend. Funny! But, I am sure you are probably right about sending her photo to the troops.

Ma'am? Drool? Us?

NO surprises. We are kicking serious arse.

That's true. We are! We will continue to kick serious butt until the great mother of all arses is most decidedly DEAD! (or a rope is around his neck)

If you make the entire force wait on defeating these small pockets, you hamper the forward progress. That is how I understood this, anyway.

Franks referred to "cleanup".

We'll be taking care of those pockets for sure.

"The pockets of resistence that pop up are being taken down. At the same time, we are closing in on Baghdad"

Absolutely. Let me add, anyone who chooses to fight for a hopeless cause, let them. They will be wiped out, and those who are left have a much better chance to set up a working government.

I do not want the fanatics to melt into the population, only to resurface as a faction that needs to be compromised with.

Well, I trust what is going on, but I have to question some of the strategic moves so far. For example, when troops encountered resistance at one of the southern towns, they simply went around the town on the way to Bagdad- without defeating them. Not only do those troops now have enemies in front of them, but also behind them.

Someone please explain to me how that is a sound strategy.

I'm not a Land Warfare guy, so I can't comment authoritatively. However, one can look at it like keeping Sea Lanes Of Communication open. There are two ways to do it: One, sanitize the area and root out all enemy before moving on, or Two, put a protective bubble of heavy arms around convoys, moving fast past the enemy before they can attack.

The disadvantage of using Method One is that it takes forever to do - you're never sure if every enemy vessel in the zone has been sunk, and what about the ones sneaking in from elsewhere. The advantage is that it defeats the enemy in detail. The disadvantage of using Method Two is that you don't really control the zone - you're just denying part of it to the enemy. The advantage of Method Two is that combat power is concentrated, instead of being spread out all over the zone.

Bet our guys will find more pockets of stiffs than "pockets of stiff resistance".
