Couric Collaborates in Rehabilitation of Tiny Tom Daschle
The Today Show
Posted on 03/21/2003 5:14:53 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
Tiny Tom Daschle just concluded an interview with Katie Couric on The Today Show.
Katie's clear intent: damage control for the diminutive Daschle in the wake of his odious criticism, on the eve of War, of President Bush's diplomacy.
While it was necessary for purposes of Katie's strategy to replay Daschle's intemperate remarks, before she even began her questioning she replayed some conciliatory and supportive comments Daschle made yesterday on the Senate floor.
Only then did Couric begin her questioning. Now imagine that a Republican had been on the hot seat in similar circumstances. Katie's first question would have undoubtedly been along the lines: "on the eve of war, with American men and women about to go into harm's way, don't you think it was harmful to their morale to undermine the leadership of their Commander in Chief?"
But instead of framing the question in terms of the unpatriotic nature of Daschle's remarks, Couric passed them off as just more wrangling between political parties.
Thus her first question was:
"Do you think this will create a chasm between Dems and Republicans?" This gave Daschle the opening to talk about the resolution unanimously passed by the Senate supporting the troops and the Commander in Chief.
That was it, the totality of Katie's "grilling" of Daschle on what was arguably the most despicable statement by a major political leader in a time of war since WWII.
From there, it was on to happy talk for the two: a mutual love-in of budget and tax-cut bashing.
Thus Katie's next question was: "Some are outraged that Bush budget sets aside $700 billion in tax cuts but nothing for costs of war."
And Katie went on to observe some "moderates" want to cut the tax cut in half. So tax-and-spend liberal opponents of Pres. Bush are magically transformed into "moderates".
Katie concluded with this "hard-hitting" question: "What is major question you would like to ask President?"

A despicable demonstration of the liberal media serving as PR flacks, image consultants and damage control artists for liberal politicians.

I have no doubt that Katie's producers and Daschle's staffers worked in advance to devise their strategy.

I concur. Her poker face lets everyone know whose side she is on. It isn't America's.

KC received some kind of award about six or seven years ago and was allowed to chose the person she would like have present it to her. Who did she pick?
Hitlery!
And she continues to say with a straight face that she is not a biased journalist. Now THAT is delusional.

Fox news had Daschle on tv. They asked him to explain himself and he said he was not going to talk about that.
The reporter said, "I WISH you would."

Isn't that telling: he refuses to answer questions on Fox, but runs to be interviewed by Katie, knowing that she will collaborate in his political rehabilitation. A real "profile in courage."

We certainly couldn't expect Couric to ask Daschle why he said in '98 that diplomacy had failed and military force was the only option to force regime change in Iraq. He said those words after Clinton passed the Iraqi Liberation Act which endorsed regime change. But today he is "deeply saddened" that Bush's diplomatic efforts failed and lays the blame for any American deaths in Iraq at the feet of this president. Hypocritical b_____.

Great point. You just know that Katie would have come out with quotes ablazin' if the tables had been turned and a Republican was on the spot.
But since she was dealing with the tiny-but-perfectly-formed Senate Minority Leader, it was the kid glove treatment.

They should call this the "No Longer Relevant Democrat/Leftist Rehabilitation Tour"... I'm sure there will be many more editions and notables going on this tour. I was disappointed that FoxNews gave Daschle this opportunity this morning. I'm also certain that Daschle's people insisted that E.D. Hill be the sole interviewer -- don't let that Brian Kilmeade ask me any questions! Heaven forbid that Mr. Daschle appear on the O'Reilly Factor to explain himself!

Wonder if Katie is planning to have Ann Coulter back any time soon?
Any excuse is good for an Ann photo!
