I'm no Mormon and if I knew some polygamists who were not raping children or abusing them in any way --say a 30 year old three-some who were minding their business, I'd probably mind mine too. I definitely don't believe in polygamy but if there was some "three's company" types next door who left me alone and lived quietly ---I'd have to say they wouldn't be an issue to me. Of course if I knew of some pervert claiming to marry a little 13 year old girl it would be entirely different.

It's not up to the Smarts. A crime is not a private matter. A crime means the community at large has been wronged, and the community has a right and a duty to exact punishment. The Smarts can decline to bring a lawsuit against the Mitchells for the related tort of assault and battery if they want (since a tort is against the individual, not the community as a crime is) but they do not have - and should not have - anything to say about whether the crime gets prosecuted or not.

I am admittedly not completely up to date with this story, but is it me, or do her parents seem to be showing more compassion toward her kidnappers than to their own daughter?

I don't get your point. They ARE doing this for their daughter...

Even the FBI spokesperson after they were called in spoke publicly about how difficult it had been to speak to the girl because the parents were not making her as available as the FBI had wanted.

I know I'm gonna get flamed, but there's much more going on here than what's being said. I think Elizabeth's parents are not real motivated about any kind of criminal charges against these two. When Elizabeth was finally found and right up to this point, her parents have not said anything negative about the perpetrators, at least I haven't heard anything. I think it was very strange how the adults came to meet to begin with. I think Elizabeth is a victim through and through, but I think she's more of a victim than anyone knows.
