Haliburton Wins Contract on Iraqi Oil Firefighting

A Halliburton Co. (nyse: HAL - news - people) subsidiary Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR) has won the contract to oversee any firefighting operations at Iraqi oilfields after any U.S.-led invasion, a Defense Department source said on Thursday.

KBR was widely viewed by many in the oilfield services industry as the likely candidate to oversee firefighting in Iraq's oilfields. Halliburton does extensive logistic support work for the U.S. military.

Vice President Dick Cheney served as Halliburton's chief executive officer from 1995 to 2000,

A possible beneficiary of Thursday's deal is oilwell firefighting company Boots & Coots International Well Control Inc., with which Halliburton has had an alliance since 1995.

A Halliburton spokeswoman declined comment and referred all questions to the Defense Department.

Perhaps the revenue Halliburton receives from this contract will make up for the losses they incurred from Cheney's acquistion of an asbestos-riddled loser while he was CEO.

This stinks in a way that only LBJ could truly appreciate.

By all means, let's hire somebody who doesn't know the region OR how to get the job done to prove Bush and Cheney aren't crooks.

The same old guys....RMKBRJ as in Vietnam.

Halliburton will manage the sub contractors dealing with the oil fields.

I have no clue, but I'm sure you're going to tell me.

Or perhaps you'd prefer that the job go to France or Germany or some country that's against us, rather than keeping the money right here in the United States.

Exactly. Halliburton is one of the top companies in this business, if not THE top company. If Saddam ignites the oil fields, we will need the very best in the business, not the most politically expedient.

I say zippety-do-dah.

The idea that an American Company should somehow be precluded from bidding on a contract simply because it once employed the Vice-President is ludicrous.

More hypocrisy from the left---Reuters to be exact.

Charity, after all, begins at home, or as in case of Iraq and Vietnam, Texas.

Well, now, I do believe that companies from certain countries, namely ones who have fought us on taking out Saddam, SHOULD be precluded from ANY jobs, etc., that may come after.

A quick search:

Jan. 25, 2003, 10:29AM 3 Houston firms may help fight oil field fires By DAVID IVANOVICH Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- If the United States leads an invasion of Iraq, one of the first priorities for allied troops will be to seize Iraq's oil fields, fearing Saddam Hussein will respond to an attack by torching his country's wells. Remembering the burning oil fields of Kuwait, military planners have contacted three Houston-area oil well firefighting companies, Cudd Well Control, Wild Well Control, and Boots & Coots International Well Control, about the prospect of following the troops into Iraq.

Haliburton certainly has the international connections, the infrastructure, and lots of talent. I should think they were a good choice to coordinate the effort.

I think Red Adair may have been personally involved the last time in Kuwait, although my memory is vague on this point, but that was some time ago. In any case you probably need a big outfit to pull all the necessary links together.

Cheney has a connection here because he has lots of connections. He's had a busy and productive life, unlike most of his critics.
