John Lott used Mary Rosh as a screen name. Now will...

Will Gun Rights lose because of this?

I am listening to the new KNEW 910 AM Radio out of SF, CA. Larry is on now and he has Lott on the air. John Lott used the first 2 letters of his 4 children's name for an email address. It sounds like he was using Mary Rosh as a screen name so that the discussions he was having wouldn't be about him, but about the subject at hand. Conservatives can't do that? I use Varmint Al as a screen and feel it doesn't hurt my creditability.

This is a non issue as far as I am concerned.

Good Screen Names... from Varmint Al

I hope this doesn't hurt the Gun Rights Movement!

Whn if you pretended Vermon Al was a former student of yours, and had Al give personal testimonials about what a great guy you are?

Larry Elder the Talk Radio Host was really holding John Lott's feet to the fire. This is the first time I have heard Larry Elder. Here is his web site:

What is monumentally idiotic about the whole thing is that John Lott had right on his side with the premise of his book. He neglected to substantiate it with the necessary scholarship, then did this stupid thing with pretending to be his own student while lauding himself. He has only himself to blame on this. He is basically a good guy who has done some really dumb things.

Time to 'fess up, John, say you're sorry and take it like a man. Then, get back to real scholarship on gun rights.

I just read about this at Instapundit (Glenn Reynolds). He says that Larry Elder has been a big supporter of John Lott. I'm glad he's holding his feet to the fire. Gun owners don't need to gloss over this thing, although this is likely to be blown way out of proportion by the gun grabbers.

This is really a very serious issue and one which always makes the lefties go off the deep end.

It starts in the traditional ultra-left wing extremist media. Any print media will require your letter to include your name and adress and they get very huffy if you don't include and most will not print letters that aren't attributable. Why? I never could figure it out.

My best guess is that it is pure censorship of non-leftist opinion. The leftest goons can't call and curse you at 3:00AM if they don't have your name and adress so they can find your 'phone number. You. OTOH, never can find the name/adress.number of the commie who wrote the liberal editorial.

That is a prime reason why the commie dems hate places like this. They can't punish someone with a non-commie opinion as they do in the extremist print media.

Any time a non-commie uses a device to protect his identity while expressing a normal American opinion, the lefties will yell. Lott will be no different. The lefty media will comment about his use of a DBA and criticize him for it. They want to be able to have their goons call him early.

I just heard John Lott interviewed on Larry Elder. It seemed a very eccentric thing to do, not nec'ly illegal. What's a busy academic like that doing wasting debating in chatrooms? Cato Institute apparently blew the whistle on this AEI scholar; a little inter-thinktank ribbing going on. I don't think our gun rights endangered, the data still stands to be refuted. However, if Lott attempted to use his student 'alter-ego' to nominate himself for a teacher award using a false identity - that would be pretty serious. Doesn't sound like anything LIKE that happened. He said he "claimed to be a student, in chat room discussions about gun rights, to indicate FIRST-HAND knowledge" of own his classroom lectures. Obviously, he HAD those -- since he GAVE the lectures. But he wanted to stay anonymous during these give-and-takes, and so claimed (falsely) he was one of his own students, "Mary." Liberals called Larry Elder's show, and actually defended Lott, saying EVERYBODY on line uses a pseudonym, and DUH. One other embarrassing incident that came up, is that Lott's son wrote a glowing book review for Amazon, about his dad's book, More Guns, Less Crime. But didn't note that he was Lott's son. Well, gee SHOCKING!!! WHO CARES. Anyone who takes those books reviews seriously and doesn't suspect they are coming DIRECTLY from the marketing dept. or the Author himself (or for the negative ones from a rival publishing house) is an IDIOT. I ignore them entirely.

A self-described "fiscal conservative" and "social liberal," Larry Elder is a true libertarian. He supports the legalization of drugs and a woman's right to choose. He believes in eliminating public welfare and entitlement programs, race and gender-based affirmative action policies and minimum wage.

Larry Elder's dreamy... {sigh} too bad I'm married. :)

John Lott sounded profoundly embarrassed, by the way. It IS a goofy thing to do. John - what were you thinking?! You should be working on your NEXT book - not spending long hours casting pearls before swine in weird, Liberal chatrooms!
