Yes, but I wish I also had time to do an analysis of success/failure for candidates who have previously been governors -- they do MUCH, MUCH better than former VP candidates -- or even than former VPs. Evan Bayh was governor of Indiana before becomming a Senator, so you are right, on paper he should indeed be a very strong candidate with a real shot of winning. Note that even FDR -- the only unsuccessful VP candidate who later went on to win the Presidency -- was able to do it only because he became governor of NY in the interim.

You are right, VP candidates are usually not chosen because they would make good Presidents, which may have a lot to do with why they do not later make successful Presidential candidates. The "national exposure" (of which there has only been ANY at all since the late 1960s) apparently serves mainly to make this fact evident to the electorate, which is why they usually can't even get themselves nominated. I would argue that Bob Dole got the '96 nomination not so much because he had been Ford's running mate, but rather on the strength of his leadership in the Senate.

In contrast, a term or two in the governor's mansion serves as a very good proving ground for bigger and better things. Which may be a big reason why four of our latest five Presidents have first served as governors.

Kennedy didn't run for VP in '56. Estes Kiefauver was Stevenson's running mate. At the '56 convention, Stevenson threw the VP nomination open in a surprise move, and Kennedy and Kiefauver were placed in nomination. Kiefauver narrowly won the nomination.

Kennedy did get a very small name recognition bump from this. But it was not at all the same thing as "running for VP." In fact, maybe he benefitted more by NOT actually being Stevenson's running mate.
