A pretty well-balanced summary of the DDT question. One MAJOR need for DDT today is for TERMITE CONTROL. DDT's persistance in the environment in this application is a GOOD THING, not bad. The "Formosa termite" is spreading rapidly through the south, destroying hundred-year-old homes, and centuries-old trees, and AFAIK, there IS no real effective insecticide for them. I don't know if DDT would work for them, but of course, since it was banned, we can't even make the attempt.

And mosquito control. There is NOTHING more effective than DDT at killing AND repelling mosquitos. There are studies that show that many things can cause eggshell thinning (the main reason for the DDT ban), but DDT was conclusivley shown not to be one of them. It is setimated the 2 MILLION lives could be saved each year if DDT were allowed for mosquito control.
