What we are seeing is that the 80's and 90's produced a big infux of northern Democrats into North Carolina. They came to North Carolina from northern Democratic families and took North Carolina to the left.
Perhaps exposure to southern culture or perhaps it was leftist government, has turned them for at least this election into Republicans.
If the national Democrats turn hard left as expected, they will turn a lot of middle class white democrats into permanent Repubilcans.
The democrats are going Ha Ha you didn't cut into our black or latino voters. What the democrats need to worry about is they may become teh black latino teachers union party.
They need to consider that a party made up of small minorities is a minority party And a party made up of the white majority is the majority party.
Pubbies did quite well in the Judiciary too. snicker snicker
I moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. When I went to DMV to get my license changed the worker asked if I wanted to register to vote. I said yes, when he asked me what party he said "Democrat?" I said no "Republican." The look on his face said it all.
Anyway Many of the Northern people who moved South from are not Democratic. NC's democratic problem existed long before the 1980's and 1990's. Southern states have a history of "Southern Democrats" pulling the democratic lever because the Republican party is seen as a "Yankee" or "Northern" party.
It is these same southern democrats who are now seeing the light and seeing how far left the democratic party has become.
When I moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina I was shocked at how liberal North Carolina was for a Southern State. The gun laws are outrageous, when I saw all the rings you had to run through in order to get a CCW Permit I was shocked. The Abortion laws are also quite lax. Pennsylvania's gun and abortion laws are much more conservative.
I hope now that the GOP seems to be winning over the "Southern Democrats" that we can Move NC to the right.
But please don't automatically assume that Northern means Democrat. I am one of the most far-right people you will meet. I make Buchanan look like a leftist. And I come from Pennsylvania (Which will always be my true home-state.)
They already are that (and dont forget to add "gay trial lawyer" )...
This difference now from the 90s is the white middle-class suburban voters that got temporarily wooed by bubba clinton is waking up to the fact ... It was another Clinton One-Night (election) Stand after all!
Now, every NC FReeper should follow the NC GOP's advice and contact their Representative in the NC State House of Representatives and strongly support their victory but also STRONGLY URGE THEM TO FOLLOW THE WISHES OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHO WORKED AND VOTED FOR THEM - TO BE SURE TO ELECT AND REPUBLICAN SPEAKER OF THE NC HOUSE!!! There is some talk of that not happening.
I went to the first day of the NC Legislature in 1994 when the Historic majority - part of the Republican Revolution which came as a result of 2 years of Clinton insanity in this nation and leadership by Newt Gingrich in the US House of Representatives. It was an amazing day! It would be a fantastic thing if as many FR Republicans in NC as possible could attend the first day of the convening of the NC Legislature!!!!! in 2003. If there is any way for me to be there, I will be!
