As I understand it he picked up a hand grenade that someone else had accidentally dropped.

What I heard, from a friend at Fort Benning, is that he was a battalion S-4 who decided to go to the field one day, and attached 2 hand grenades to his equipment by those convenient rings on the top. One snagged on something when he got off the helicopter. Others soldiers were wounded as well.
