NTSB official says unlikely collisions were accidental

(New York-AP) -- An National Transportation Safety Board official says he doubts today's collisions at the World Trade Center were accidental.

Ira Furman tells C-N-N that the World Trade Center is a very visible building.

He says it's hard to imagine a pilot could hit the building unintentionally during the daytime.

He also says it's even less likely that it could happen twice in such a short time.

Furman tells C-N-N planes do occasionally fly in that airspace.

He says they can come within a mile or two of around the building.

Furman adds it's entirely possible for aircraft to fly through New York without reporting to under air traffic control.

The crash at the Pentagon came a short time after this morning's twin disaster at the World Trade Center in New York City.

The twin disaster at the World Trade Center happened shortly before 9 a.m. and then right around 9 a.m.

Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the side of the twin towers, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and debris rained down upon the street, one of the city's busiest work areas. When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving a huge hole in the glass and steel tower.

John Axisa, who was getting off a PATH train to the World Trade Center, said he saw "bodies falling out'' of the building. He said he ran outside, and watched people jump out of the first building, and then there was a second explosion, and he felt heat on the back of neck.

WCBS-TV, citing an FBI agent, said five or six people jumped out of the windows. People screamed every time another person leaped.

David Reck was handing out literature for a candidate for public advocate a few blocks away when he saw a jet come in "very low, and then it made a slight twist and dove into the building.''

People ran down the stairs in panic and fled the building. Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles away.

Within the hour, an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon, and the West Wing of the White House was evacuated amid threats of terrorism. And another explosion rocked New York about an hour after the crash.

"Today we've had a national tragedy,'' Bush said in Sarasota, Fla. "Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country.'' He said he would be returning immediately to Washington.

Terrorist bombers struck the World Trade Center in February 1993, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000 others.

"A second occurrence is just beyond belief,'' said Ira Furber, former National Transportation Safety Board spokesman.

Several subway lines were immediately shut down Tuesday. Trading on Wall Street was suspended.

"We heard a large boom and then we saw all this debris just falling,'' said Harriet Grimm, who was inside a bookstore on the World Trade Center's first floor when the first explosion rocked the building.

"The plane was coming in low and ... it looked like it hit at a slight angle,'' said Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, the network reported.

In 1945, an Army Air Corps B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in dense fog.

In Florida, Bush was reading to children in a classroom at 9:05 a.m. when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, whispered into his ear. The president briefly turned somber before he resumed reading. He addressed the tragedy about a half-hour later.

Two planes crash into World Trade Center in apparent terrorist

NEW YORK (AP) -- In a horrific sequence of destruction, terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center and knocked down one of the 110-story towers Tuesday morning. Explosions also rocked the Pentagon and the State Department and spread fear across the nation.

A witness said he saw bodies falling from the twin towers and people jumping out.

President Bush ordered a full-scale investigation to "hunt down the folks who committed this act.''

One of the planes that crashed into the Trade Center was American Airlines Flight 11, hijacked after takeoff from Boston en route to Los Angeles, American Airlines said.

The planes blasted fiery, gaping holes in the upper floors of the twin towers. The southern tower collapsed with a roar about an hour later.

"This is perhaps the most audacious terrorist attack that's ever taken place in the world,'' said Chris Yates, an aviation expert at Jane's Transport in London. "It takes a logistics operation from the terror group involved that is second to none. Only a very small handful of terror groups is on that list. ... I would name at the top of the list Osama Bin Laden.''

All planes were grounded across the country by the Federal Aviation Administration. All bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed down.

Chaotic scene of devastation unfolds on national television

With BC-Trade Center By DAVID BAUDER

AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- A chaotic scene of devastation unfolded on national television Tuesday with cameras catching a plane crashing into the World Trade Center and the subsequent collapse of both of the towers.

Television networks began live coverage of a morning of terrorism at the time the first plane hit the New York City landmark. With cameras trained on the smoking skyscraper, television caught the second plane crashing into the other tower, footage replayed several times.

As the terror spread, CNN showed a split screen view of the smoking World Trade Center and the Pentagon, where smoke billowed from another plane crash.

Reports spread as fast as television could detail them -- planes grounded across the country, the White House evacuated, an apparent explosion on Capitol Hill -- while commentators tried to keep calm.

"This may be one of the worst tragedies ever to strike this country,'' said MSNBC's John Siegenthaler.

A producer from CNN, Rose Arce, reported people jumping from the World Trade Center and described the chaos gripping lower Manhattan.

Cameras then caught the collapse of both of the twin towers, showing white smoke billowing throughout the streets of lower Manhattan. A shaken Ashleigh Banfield reporting on MSNBC described debris showering around.

"Oh, my God,'' a breathless Banfield said. "It's just unbelievable.''

C-SPAN took phone calls from shaken citizens. One caller from California said: "This is a sign to America: We think we are the strongest country and they hit us; they knew where to hit us.''

NEW YORK (AP) -- Wall Street shut down Tuesday after two separate planes crashed into the World Trade Center.

Much of the downtown district, including the nearby Financial Center. It was also difficult to make phone calls to the downtown business district and throughout Manhattan.

Trading was suspended at the New York Stock Exchange, and officials were deciding whether to shut for the entire day. The Nasdaq Stock Market said it was still considering an 11:30 a.m opening, but no final decision had been made.

Other markets did close: the American Stock Exchange and the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The nearby World Financial Center, which houses the NYMEX, was also evacuated.

An apparent similar attack on the Pentagon in Washington and reports of the collapse of one of the World Trade Center skyscrapers in Washington added to the paralysis and terror already engulfing the financial district.

"The two explosions were incredible and at the point of explosions all you could see outside were personal belongings and office supplies raining outside,'' said Bob Rendine, an American Stock Exchange spokesman, whose office is down the block from the NYSE. "We're staying here. We think it's safer to stay inside then go outside at this point.''

Business and trading in other parts of the country also were affected. The Chicago Board of Trade also suspended all trading effective, 10:15 a.m.

Around the country and world, the investment community was focused on the fate of people working in the buildings affected by the apparent terrorist attacks.

"I'm just worried about people who are there,'' said Robert Harrington, head of listed block trading at UBS Warburg's office in Connecticut.

Day of horror: Nation in shock as World Trade Center, Pentagon

By ROBERT TANNER
Associated Press Writer

The nation reeled in horror as the work day began with a series of bombs and crashes that left the World Trade Center in flames and smoke billowing from the Pentagon.

"We're like everyone else, in shock,'' said Carol Windham, a spokeswoman at Birmingham International Airport in Alabama. Planes were grounded nationwide.

Heightened security went into effect at government and corporate offices nationwide, from the Army's main germ warfare defense laboratory in Frederick, Md., to city offices in Colorado.

"I don't think there's any place in America right now that's not at risk,'' said Andrew Hudson, a city spokesman in Denver, where emergency preparedness officials gathered in the basement of City Hall.

In Philadelphia, dozens of people gathered in a hotel lounge to watch television coverage.

A visitor from Texas wept.

"I can't believe what I'm seeing. I never thought I would see anything like this in my lifetime,'' said 20-year-old Beverly Evans of Dallas. "How can we stop something like this from happening?''

Disaster forces postponement of New York City mayoral primary

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City's primary election was called off Tuesday after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

The primary was to select candidates for mayor and other city offices.

Naomi Bernstein, a spokeswoman for the Board of Elections, said the judge charged with overseeing the election called it off because of the massive confusion and terror that followed the attack on the twin towers, which both collapsed.

There was no immediate word on when the election would take place.

Four Democrats and two Republicans are in the running for their parties' nod Tuesday to run in the November election and succeed Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The Republican mayor is barred by a term-limits law from running again.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon was struck by aircraft, a car bomb exploded outside the State Department and agents patrolled outside the White House with automatic weapons Tuesday as an apparent coordinated terrorist attack spread fear and chaos in the nation's capital.

The enduring symbols of American power were evacuated, the Capitol, White House and more shut down, and the nation's air traffic system ordered shut down. Billows of smoke drifted from the Pentagon over the Potomac River toward the capital.

"Terrorism against our nation will not stand,'' vowed President Bush. He spoke moments after two planes had flown directly into the twin World Trade Center towers in New York.

"This shows what an uncontrollable world we live in. This is crazy, wild and crazy,'' said Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., as the disruptions hit Washington within an hour after two planes flew directly into the World Trade Center towers in New York.

Bush, in Florida when the attacks hit, termed the disaster in New York "an apparent terrorist attack on our country.'' He said he would return immediately to Washington.

A senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, "We don't know who's doing it. Clearly, it's terrorism related, a carefully coordinated attack. It's not the work of an unsophisticated enemy. It's too soon to say who.''

Paul Begala, a Democratic consultant, said he witnessed an explosion near the Pentagon.

"It was a huge fireball, a huge, orange fireball,'' Begala said in an interview on his cell phone.

He said another witness told him a helicopter exploded. AP reporter Dave Winslow also saw the crash. He said, "I saw the tail of a large airliner. ... It plowed right into the Pentagon.''

Gen. Richard Myers, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that prior to the crash into the Pentagon, military officials had been notified that another hijacked plane had been heading from the New York area to Washington. He said he assumed that hijacked plane was the one that hit the Pentagon, though he couldn't be sure.

Meanwhile, one of two planes that crashed into the World Trade Center was hijacked after takeoff from Boston, a U.S. official said, citing a transmission from the plane.

The second plane may have flown out of Newark, N.J., the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Asked if there was any possibility the crashes were anything other than deliberate, the official said it appeared not to be an accident, the official said.

'I just saw the top of Trade Two come down.'

BC-Trade Center Crash
By HELEN O'NEILL

AP Special Correspondent

Americans watched in horror Tuesday as New York turned into a crumbling, smoking nightmare in the wake of an apparent terrorist attack.

"I just saw the building I work in come down,'' said businessman Gabriel Ioan, shaking in shock outside City Hall a cloud of smoke and ash from the World Trade Center behind him. "I just saw the top of Trade Two come down.''

Nearby a crowd mobbed a man on a pay-phone, screaming at him to get off the phone so that they could call relatives. Dust and dirt flew everywhere. Ash was 2 to 3 inches deep in places. People wandered dazed and terrified.

"I was in the World Financial Center looking out the window,'' said one woman. "I saw the first plane and then 15 minutes later saw the other plane just slam into the World Trade Center.''

Another eyewitness, AP newsman Dunstan Prial, described a strange sucking sound from the Trade Center buildings after the first building collapsed.

"Windows shattered. People were screaming and diving for cover. People walked around like ghosts, covered in dirt, weeping and wandering dazed.''

"It sounded like a jet or rocket,'' said Eddie Gonzalez, a postal worker at a post office on West Broadway. "I looked up and saw a huge explosion. I didn't see the impact. I just saw the explosion.''

Morning commuters heading into Manhattan were stranded as the Lincoln Tunnel was shut down to incoming traffic. Many left their cars and stood on the ramp leading to the tunnel, staring in disbelief at the thick cloud of smoke pouring from the top of the two buildings.

On the streets of Manhattan, people stood in groups talking quietly or watching on television at ground-level network studios.

Joan Goldstein, communications project leader for The Associated Press, was on a bus from New Jersey at about 8:50 a.m. when she saw "smoke pouring out of the World Trade Center building. We said, 'Oh, my God! The World Trade Center's on fire!''

Perhaps 10 minutes later, "All of a sudden, there was an orange plume, a huge explosion. It shot out the back of the building. Everybody on the bus was just moaning and gasping,'' said Goldstein, who wept and trembled as she spoke.

The plume was from the second plane, but she didn't see the plane because of the thick smoke.

She tried to call friends who work there, but couldn't get through.

"It was the most horrible thing I've ever seen in my life,'' said Goldstein.

High alert, evacuations, closures nationwide after attacks at

By DAVID CRARY
AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities went on alert from coast to coast Tuesday, halting all air traffic, evacuating high-profile buildings and tightening security at strategic facilities following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Evacuations were ordered at the United Nations building in New York and at the Sears Tower in Chicago.

"Usually the building is so full of activity, and now there's no one in the hallways. It's creepy,'' said Cathy Grable, a 31-year-old interior designer who was leaving the Sears Tower.

Security was increased at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., home to the Army's main germ warfare defense laboratory.

Spokesman Charles Dasey said police at the gates were stopping cars without identification stickers and might search even those with stickers.

In California, Gov. Gray Davis convened a meeting of the State Emergency Council and requested heightened security in all state buildings.

In Los Angeles, the police went on tactical alert, and mobilized an anti-terrorist division. A tactical alert means officers are held over from the earlier shift to bolster the day shift and police only respond to priority calls.

In Virginia, authorities ordered intensified security at the port complex in Hampton Roads and imposed a lockdown of offices at the Capitol.

Under orders from the Federal Aviation Administration, airports nationwide halted all outbound flights, while keeping their runways open for incoming plans.

"We're like everyone else, in shock,'' said Carol Windham, spokesman at Birmingham International Airport in Alabama.

Witness: there were bodies falling from the building

(New York-AP) -- John Axisa was getting off a PATH train to the World Trade Center to get to work -- when he saw "bodies falling out'' of the building.

He says police told him to get out of the building immediately. He says he ran outside -- only to see people jumping out of the building. Then he felt a second explosion -- and heat on the back of his neck.

Two planes crashed into the upper floors of both World Trace Center towers in downtown Manhattan. Both of the towers have now collapsed.

Harriet Grimm was inside a bookstore on the first floor of the building when she heard a large boom and saw debris falling.

Large plane crashes in Pennsylvania; unclear if it is related to day of attacks

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A large plane crashed Tuesday morning just north of the Somerset County Airport, airport and county emergency officials said.

The plane, believed to be a 747 jumbo jet, crashed about 10 a.m. about eight miles east of Jennerstown, according to county 911 dispatchers, WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh reported.

Officials weren't saying what airline was involved. It was unclear if the crash was related to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington.

Sean Cavanaugh, a commissioner in neighboring Fayette County, said his emergency management director, Barney Shipley, advised him that the plane originated in either Cleveland or New York and was bound for Chicago, WPXI reported.

Contrary to earlier reports of the plane being a 767, Cavanaugh said he was told the airplane was a Boeing 747, the largest passenger jet flown domestically.

The Somerset County airport, about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, in a small, rural facility that does not handle such aircraft.

Because of the attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration had ordered all departing flights canceled nationwide, and any planes already in the air were to land a the nearest airport. The plane crashed shortly after the order was issued.

It was not immediately known if the 747 might have been trying to land at the Somerset County airport when the crash occurred.

The crash came the same morning that terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York City and the twin 110-story towers collapsed. Explosions also rocked the Pentagon and the State Department and spread fear across the nation.

There were no other immediate details on the Pennsylvania crash.

Plane that hit Trade Center had been bound for LA

(Los Angeles-AP) -- An American Airlines headed to Los Angeles from Boston was one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center this morning.

Airline officials say Flight Eleven had been hijacked after takeoff.

There's no word on the number of passengers on the plane.

Both World Trade Center towers were attacked just minutes apart -- sparking fires and sending heavy smoke pouring from the buildings. Both towers later collapsed in a giant ball of white smoke.

American Airlines plans to release a statement shorty.

In Washington, crowded streets as people leave early

(Washington-AP) -- Washington is jammed with people who've been sent home from work early.

With businesses and the government closing up and dismissing their workers, the sidewalks are teeming with pedestrians making their way toward bus stops and Metro subway stations. Metro trains are crowded and the streets are packed with cars.

For the most part, people are making their way in a calm and orderly fashion -- though with a sense of purpose.

There are lines at A-T-M's and at public phones, as many people report having trouble getting signals on their wireless phones.
