The bottom line is that the attempt by Arab rulers to maintain their power by focusing popular resentment against the West has boxed them into a corner. Either they suppress the terrorists (in which case the "Arab street" turns on them) or they continue to give them tacit (or active) cooperation (in which case the West will squash them in self-defense). The stakes have been pushed too high for the traditional policy of playing both ends against the middle.

Overpopulation and economic stagnation are age-old phenomena to Arabs and Mongols. Next stop -invasion. It's been recurring like this for the last 1500 yr.s. With the last major attack being almost 550 years ago they're long overdue.
