Because he has the Democrat vote lined up. He's reaching out to independents and moderate Republicans now.

The 2000 Presidential race in PA was also decided by about 200K votes. Polls showed us how close it was leading up to Election Day. And who knows if it would have been even closer without the DWI revelation?

Is Schweiker going to be campaigning for the republican? He certainly has a tremendous well of good will since the mining rescue.

For Mr. Rendell, watch for a repeat of his primary campaign theme, that he is a pro-growth, can-do mayor who can replicate as governor the same economic turn-around that he claims to have delivered while running the show in Philadelphia.

This will be a more salient issue for independents than guns and abortion. During good times, independent voters have the luxury of chatting about issues like guns and abortion. During an economic downturn, they focus on jobs and the economy.

Fisher needs to challenge him on this perceived strength of Rendell's.

Mr. Fisher, the most conservative Republican nominee in a generation, hopes to capitalize on strong support from the pro-life and anti-gun communities

I assume he means pro-gun.

I'll say it.

"That backstabbing, abortion-loving BITCH!"

This is why I hate RINOs.

All she had to do was keep her mouth shut.

I will NEVER, EVER vote for her again.

Usually, you wait a week or two AFTER Labor Day to see if the polls taken since Labor Day and the TV advertising have had any effect.

The Hershey thing is meaningless.

Hafer's "bombshell" hurts, however.

Yeah - pro-gun or anti-gun control is what he meant.

I think Delano is incapable of writing the word "pro-gun".

But he's right to say that the race will be close in the end, Heifer or no Heifer.

The reason Republicans lose is they have traitors.

Democrats have no traitors. Hives never do.

The recidivist,RICO-racketeering, reprobate Rendell probably threatened to have her whacked if she didn't come across for him!

Jon Delano never seems to go away. When I was growing up, he worked for Dem. Congressman Doug Walgren, who represented my district before being beaten by newcomer (now Senator) Rick Santorum in 1990. Delano would stand outside the local Giant Eagle supermarket, wearing the funny straw hat favored by convention attendees, and passing out Walgren literature. The district was very Republican for many years, yet kept putting Doug Walgren back in for ages. When he lost to Santorum, Walgren said that it was a matter of time before he lost, being in a Republican district...sort of like delayed gerrymandering.

Ironically, Santorum was nearly gerrymandered out of office after his first term when the Mon Valley (big steel heavily unionized area) was added to his district. The main reason he won reelection in hostile territory in 1992 was that the Dems had seven candidates in the primary. Six labourites were defeated by a recently converted RINO who lost in an upset because the union folks didn't have anyone to feel enthusiastic about. If Rick hadn't run for Senate (and won) in 1994, he likely would have lost his Congressional seat at the polls.

Delano, meanwhile, ran at least once for either State Rep or State Senator and lost, but he seems to be doing just fine dividing his time between media and academia. Just wish he'd shut up, though...

So where is Peg Luksik when you need her?

Excellent point. I passed on Peg in 1994 because I feared that the election would be too close to not beat Marc Singel. I regret not voting my conscience that year. Four years earlier, I defiantly pulled the Bob Casey lever because Hafer ran the most repugnant political campaign I have ever seen. She knows how to alienate her base, believe me.

In 1998, my vote was Luksik's from the get-go. I hated the thought of giving any kind of support to a pro-abort RINO like Tom Ridge, and felt that I could afford to go third party due to Ivan Itkin's ineffectual challenge which posed no threat to the incumbent. I even convinced my wife, a pro-life Dem, to go with Luksik.

Now, for the first time since I was old enough to vote, there's a PRO-LIFE REPUBLICAN on the ballot. I've even convinced my wife, who supported Casey in the primary, to cast her vote for Fisher. She tends to be a gun-grabbing socialist, but at least she knows what the most important issue is.
