You are so correct. People can be downright stupid about a wild animal.

My husband will kill me for telling this story on him, so shush, okay?

We live in the city limits on two heavily wooded lots. A couple of years ago, a mama coon showed up with her three adorable little cubs. We found her den at the back of our property. My husband fell in love with the little rascals and started leaving food in the farther lot for them. Soon, they were traipsing up to the house to wait for food, even in the afternoon. Did he learn his lesson? Noooo...he kept on feeding them, even though he had been born and raised on a rural farmplace and knew better. One afternoon, I came home to find them all asleep on the deck, even. Well, one night he forgot to close the side gararage door until late and mama coon got trapped. Mama coon got up into the attic and tore up cable, electrical, and phone lines...not to even mention the insulation. He learned his lesson that night for sure. LOL

Good, so why aren't there more bearskin rugs in the trendy stores? I would love to have one, myself.

Well, is it not just so sweet of the State of California Wildlife Bureau to let him off the killing the bear?

I bet if the bear had just decided to LOOK in the window instead of trying to gain entry, they would have thrown the book at him.

I hope no one took a picture or got it on video. Too awful to imagine! God bless the family.

No problem with self defense, but it cuts the other way too. There was an incident in Alaska several years ago in which two men saw a juvenile bear on the side of the road. It went into the brush and they got out of their vehicle and followed it with 1. A camera 2. A sandwich and 3. A pistol. The bear rared up on its hind legs and the guys got scared and shot it. They were charged, as well they should have been IMO. I wouldn't have been sorry to see the bear kill them.

My apologies... it's just that the wording struck me as a little odd and open to interpretation.
Of course I knew what you meant, I just thought I'd help "clarify" before someone else caught it.

Fallsburg isn't too far from me. A lot of jewish people go to camps there and they're mostly from NY city. You wouldn't believe the dumb things people do. I believe these folks fed the bear just like you would at the zoo. Either they ran out of food or the baby cried and the bear thought it was an animal. They feed and try to pet anything that's furry. Drownings are another problem. There will be "No Swimming or Diving" signs and they do anyway.

We have had bears try to get into our home while we were in it several times. We have had a bear come in our barn and kill a valuable milk goat. We have had bears come into our fields and kill our sheep. People all around us feed the bears. I mean hand feed, like handing them a sandwich, as well as just putting the food out on the ground to watch them.

If you feed a bear, the most you can get is a ticket for feeding wildlife.

If you feed a bear and shoot it, the most you get is loss of your hunting license for a couple of years and a fee.

I bet that if bears get shot at if they are fed by people, they would leave people alone.

I took no offense. I was just teasing of slapping you. I had to laugh, myself, at my wording.

Yikes! Good thing he had something bigger than a rolled up newspaper.

We will do an investigation after the fact, ...

Uhhh, what other kind is there?

but black bears are just not noted for attacking humans,'' Stone said

A Black Bear killed a lady here in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park two years ago. When rangers were summoned to the site, the two bears were still there.

Both bears were put down and later tested but nothing was found to be wrong with them such as rabies.

The lady was a local elementary school teacher who hiked fairly often and when her camera was examined it was found to contain photos of the bears that killed her. Her daypack, which contained some snacks, was untouched.

Both bear were underweight if I remember correctly and it was early Spring. One bear was adult while the other was a yearling.

There was another attack also which was a little less mysterious. A man at a campsite had finished eating something greasy and layed down in his hammock and fell asleep without washing his hands. He was bit on the arm or hand but was not seriously wounded.

In a turn of events, this summer in the GSMNP, a group of motorist on a one way scenic loop, had the rare experience of seeing a small bear take down a deer fawn. The motorist became outraged at the brutality of the scene and attacked the bear by kicking, throwing rocks and one fellow even reportedly picked up the bear and threw it wrestling style.Luckily for this crowd, the mother bear was not around or the attackers would have become the attackees. The bear weighed about 40 pounds.

The motorist then took the fawn to a ranger station and explained what had happened. They were charged with "disturbing wildlife" and some other charges. The fawn died so it was taken back to the same spot in hopes that the yearling bear would come back to finish the task.

The same scene unfolded again a few weeks later, in the same area, possibly the same bear, and some other motorist also became the attackers trying to save a fawn. They began to yell and throw rocks but luckily there was a person around who knew how to take control of the would be mob and set them straight on the realities of wildlife. She gave them a lecture on the nature of the food chain.

I know this sounds too incredible but this did unfold here this year in the space of a month. The really incredible thing is that this was more than likely the same bear that was attacked twice while just trying to do whats natural.

This bear may never want to try and eat again.....LOL. The sign says "Dont feed the bears", not "Dont let the bears feed!"

Perhaps my mom was right when she told me that Jews just don't go hiking.

Frankly, all I want to know is what ammo is best for bear.

FMJ, soft points...a LOT of whatever you've got!

Avoid headshots. Bear brains are very low in the skull, behind the mouth, basically. All sorts of animals around in the woods.

Be prepared. Go armed.

"It sounds as if the whole bunch just watched the bear approach, methinks even egged it on by feeding it. But, I could be wrong. There is no way though I would have sat placidly by as a wild animal walked up to my infant."

Given the info available, that is quite a leap of judgemental imagination. . .

By the way...these critters can weigh around 500 pounds, fur often packed with mud...not a bunny rabbit, and these days, not particularly afraid of humans. It's the woods.

Also BUMP the "dying rabbit" predator call post.

As I said...you never know. Be prepared.
