In case anyone isn't sure what a Torah scroll is, it's the five Books of Moses-- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy handwritten onto parchment in the original Hebrew. It may help, in understanding the effect of the damage, that a Torah scroll is entirely done by hand, using specially prepared parchment skins, done in a very painstaking way by a specially trained calligrapher (sofer). The copying takes approximately a year's work for one calligrapher, so the price is roughly the equal of a year's salary for a skilled artisan. In the US the price is roughly $50G.
