Police investigating shooting Two people shot early Wednesday; suspect still at large
By Eric Swanson Dodge City Daily Globe
A Dodge City woman and her brother were shot early Wednesday morning at 1705 W. Beeson Road, and the suspect in the shooting was still at large as of Wednesday afternoon.
At about 12:28 a.m. Wednesday, officers from the Dodge City Police Department and the Ford County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at the home at 1705 W. Beeson Road, according to a press release from the police department.
Deputy Police Chief Tom Bos said Wednesday he thought the report came from one of the other occupants of the house.
Bos said eyewitnesses at the scene told authorities that a 37-year-old man, identified as Dodge City resident Pheng Phommachanh, forced his way through the house's back door and shot his estranged wife, 27-year-old Hongkham Phaengsy, several times with a 9 mm handgun.
Phommachanh also allegedly shot his brother-in-law, 27-year-old Kaykeo Phaengsy, once in the lower abdomen.
Bos said, to investigators' knowledge, there was no quarrel before the shooting began. He also said, to his knowledge, there was no sign of a struggle before the shooting.
He said it was unknown how long Pheng Phommachanh and his estranged wife had been separated or why.
Some children who lived in the house with Hongkham Phaengsy were present when the shooting occurred, but none of them were injured, Bos said. The relationship between the children and the people involved in the shooting was not clear.
Both victims were transported to Western Plains Medical Complex for treatment, and they were still in the hospital as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Bos said.
The suspect was apparently not wounded.
Bos declined to comment on whether there was a history of violence involving Pheng Phommachanh, Hongkham Phaengsy and Kaykeo Phaengsy.
Police had not recovered the gun used in the shooting Wednesday, and Pheng Phommachanh was still at large, Bos said. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, but police do not know if he is still carrying the gun used in the shooting.
"We can only assume he's still considered armed and dangerous for what he's done," Bos said.
Police have not established a motive for the shooting, which is still under investigation.
Phommachanh is an Asian male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, according to the press release. He has brown hair and eyes.
The Gentleman Sherriff has called upon the good town to be vigilant and to consider resorting to a Posse. On this last point he was misinterpreted by farmer folk towards the back of the crowd and howls of derisive laughter ensued.
....he whispered in the horse's ear, "I said POSSE!".
The honorable deputy, Tran Bang, whispered to the Gentleman Sherriff, "Whores will never be the same."
