Luis is right John. He is not speaking I don't think about policy, but about "rights." Of course policy should encourage the speaking of English by all who reside here, although if someone doesn't want to learn it, they have the "right" not to do so. Luis is also right that the reality is that Hispanics and other non English speaking immigrants are learning English, or more importantly, their progeny are, faster than immigrants did way back when. That has to do with external factors such as the media and the nationalization of the economy. The alleged fragility of English is really one of this planet's great non problems. JMO.

The "rights" appear to be all one-way ---the illegals have a right to come here without following the laws, they have the right to keep their language and culture, when that doesn't work out so well, they have the right to taxpayer money to support them. Americans seem to have no rights in this matter.
