Paul is very quotable, I think.

Your post is one of the few instances where I would applaud a priest for disobeying a superior. Normally I am rather rigid about that, but not to obey with an informed intellect, not blindly. Except in very serious matters, such as harm to others, obedience is to be preferred.

Except in very serious matters, such as harm to others, obedience is to be preferred. I agree generally. BUt obedience to pure evil cannot be condoned. These sexual molestation cases and the cover ups of them have led many priests to be obedient to pure evil. Priests must be able to recognize Satanic acts within their midst, and must find the will to combat such acts. Raping 12 year old boys is a Satanic act, in my book.

When Bishop Gregory was on Meet the Press last month, Tim Russert quoted Luke, when Christ said that if someone caused little ones to sin, it would be better if a mill stone was tied to their neck and cast into the sea. When Russert asked for Bishop Gregory's comment, and if that was the case here, he said in effect: "I don't know." Is Gregory (and the other bishops) really a Christian?

Of course you are absolutely right. Still, even with myself, upon being confronted with such a thing, I might have an instinct to try to cover it up. It would take a flash of wisdom to make me see the evil of covering such a thing up, and then I would need the courage to buck the system.
My thinking is different now after having to consider the magnitude of the abuse cases. It makes me want to scream.

My thinking is different now after having to consider the magnitude of the abuse cases. It makes me want to scream. In my whole life, I think only the tragedy of 9/11 has been as great a sadness to me as the Catholic scandal. I still cry inside when I think about it.
