Hollywood to Secede From L.A. - How About Leaving the Union?

Hollywood wants out of Los Angeles, and voters will get a chance to vote on letting liberal Tinseltown go in November.

Something called the Local Agency Formation Commission decided to allow voters to decide if Hollywood can secede from the city, according to the Los Angeles Times, which noted that if Hollywood goes, such internationally known landmarks as the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame will go with it.

"We've won today," Gene La Pietra, the Hollywood nightclub owner who is leading the secession movement, told the Times. "This is a small step for Hollywood and a great big step for Los Angeles. The people will get to decide."

Secessionists claim that a separate Hollywood would be better able to deal with crime, upgrade the city's famous boulevards and restore Hollywood to its former glory. They say that Los Angeles is too big to work well.

"We're actually doing [Mayor] Jim Hahn a favor," La Pietra told the Times' Nita Lelyveld and Patrick McGreevy "When it's all over, he'll have a manageable L.A."

Chances that Hollywood will go it alone appear to be good, some residents say.

"If L.A. continues to treat Hollywood in the same manner [as in the past] with the same service level, secession will probably happen," Hollywood businessman Dave Gajda, who owns four buildings and has an interest in two nightclubs there, told the Times.

Now, if we could just get it to secede from the Union ...

Dig a trench around the municipality, put sufficient flotation devices beneath and at the edges, and set the entire island adrift in the sea....

I tried to do a link to the LA Times article mentioned in the original, but it's a subcription site. Plus the website isn't even worth visiting.

Hollywood is not, and never was, a city, town, or village, so this would require a lot of maniputlation of the laws. Since the property values there are quite high, I imagine that LA will not want to let go of the taxes.

Guess what? As soon as they can create level of services noticeably superior to the surrounding areas, the people they are trying to keep out will flock in. They'll demand equal access to facilities and housing, then they'll make demands for further subsudies to "equalize the playing field". The whole mess to will be due to the blantant socialism that Hollywood has thrust upon the rest of us all these years. Now it's going to turn upon them and consume them.

They'd be better off if they just built a wall around themselves.

First the San Fernando Valley, now Hollywood. It seems Kenneth Hahn and the downtown liberals are caught between a rock and a hard place. Good luck to the Mayor and company in holding overblown L.A together.

I live near the proposed border (but fortunately outside). Most of the proposed city is low income, relatively high crime, immigrant, etc. None of the Hollywood types live there (Baldwin, Sheen, Streisand, etc.).

There's a decent business base between the theaters, Paramount Studios and some more minor studios.

There's a scam to draw in some higher income neighborhoods that no one would consider part of Hollywood...done solely for the tax base.

LA is gonna flip. Downtown, with everyone whining, "you don't do enough for us" just may find out what happens when all those people they hate quit paying the bills. Expect major league riots as soon as the extortion money quits coming, and tanks at the city limits of Hollywood to keep the riots from coming in.

So the rich Hollywood Libs want their own 'gated' community when they can keep their taxes to benefit their city. No more supporting LA and all their poor. No the Libs want their money spent on them, not the poor.

I'm still surprised that LA hasn't drafted a large army and had them go in there and burn everyone's houses down. If these people are allowed to withdraw from a government that doesn't serve their interests where will it stop?

Can we just ship all of Hollywood to Cuba? You know, that place with the free healthcare and free education. That paradise, that people risk their lives to escape, that we keep hearing so much about.

Don't forget the harbor area. If they secede, Hahn will have to move.

There are lots of us in Hollywood that are conservatives. Besides movies aren't made in Hollywood. The studios are in Burbank and Culver City for the most part.
