This is only my opinion but ... Brock was probably frustrated by an inability to break into other media outlets -- either as a writer or a commentator -- and he thought that throwing off the conservative label would get him in the good graces of the eastern media establishment. That almost never works out, in my experience because it's hard to trust somebody who throws principles away on a whim.

I wonder how talented Brock was to begin with
I just read the Hitchens piece
that is such terrific writing
Hitch is honest, intelligent, forthright, great writer
I only read one book by Brock (his book on Hillary) it was meticulously researched, but the book itself was unreadable
Besides which, your point is true
when he made the switch it appeared it was for opportunistic reasons
I don't agree with everything Hitch writes, but you can feel his integrity and conviction
Brock may have wanted to be a media star
