A surprising vote by the House last night to repeal traffic camera enforcement of speeding on state roads and highways was the final blow to the much-maligned program. After learning of the vote, Gov. Ben Cayetano today terminated the program, effective immediately.

Sorry - traffic speed cameras - point and shoot. Big Brother on wheels. The things generated way more tickets per hour than a simple cop could. Big money grab for the state government and vigorously opposed by the handful of Republican house members we have here.

When we had these in Folsum CA I just took off my front plate. No front plate is a fixit ticket but no front plate means no speeding ticket. Never got hasseled for the plate and they canceled the program when everybody made them go to court and they lost 99%+ of cases taken to trial (could'nt prove who was actually driving).

Besides this just ain't sportin'. Like dear hunting with an antipersonel mine.

That's almost identical to what's happened here - many lawsuits thrown out because driver couldn't be proven to be the same as the registration holder. Then we also have a lawsuit going forward because most people's drivers' licenses here have their SSN on them (all but the newest ones). Giving this info to the private company that runs the cameras is against some other state law.

She's got a good chance this time around. The DemocRATS are eating their own young this time around - effectively nullifying the campaign of her likeliest contender, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris until his mayoral term runs out in June or July. Of course we still have the unions to deal with, though the teachers' union has been none too pleased with Cayetano's performance (which all in all hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought it would be).
