Islam has more than its share of extremists, as I've been finding out. I started reading up on this and suggest everyone do the same. Go to a bookstore and get some books. First I would suggest you get a copy of Steve Emerson's newest, called "American Jihad." It will open your eyes.
Sure, they have a extremist element. This element is their ARMY! It is their fighting force!(similar to the IRA wing that represent the political arm of same) They worship and revere their martyred bombers!
I am always speaking for those conservative virtues of prudence and civility, but not at the expense of careful analysis of the specifics.
It does appear that your take is meant to minimize the threat or perception of extremists in Islam by saying that they have a equal small percentage of this trait as compared to all other religions. That is probably not the case.
My reading is that Islam has a couple of factors which make a larger percentage of their followers both fundementalist and reactionary. The first factor is that the Islam is percieved to be the full and complete word of God as given directly to the Prophet. It not a piecemeal revelation to prophets and apostles over time as the other monothesitic religions are formed. They believe no further revelation or is coming forth or needed...it is perfect in itself. Christianity, for example, has the Holy Spirit portion of the Trinity as "God with us" to carry us ever forward in preparation....Islam has no such corresponding component, IMHO and my reading.
Thus, all modern efforts are viewed as hearesy to a point beyond views held by the other religions.
I encourage people to read what this has done to the culture in the Arab lands and their whole society. This looking backward to the Koran in all things and backward to the great age (for their cultural view) of the Prophet does not allow them to make the steps to the freedom of beliefs that is basic to our other freedoms.
