At one time, France had some every ballsy diplomats. What happened? Did they put estrogen in the water?

But seriously, there are still conservatives and rightists in France, and one hopes that they can regain power. There is a good article in the Economist about France's Presidential Election. If Chirac wins, right forces may be able to gain control of Parliament; if Josspin wins, Francais est morte.
