Actually, we do have control over the future: don't pass laws which can be misused later.
Bush is in the White House by the slimmest of slim margins. Ample reason not to explode the powers of government during his term. The War on Terrorism could be easily won by enforcing the will of the citizenry and guarding our borders and allowing the unrestricted right to keep and bear arms.
Exactly. That's why almost all laws should have sunset provisions. Not only would bad laws lapse, but a lot of congress's time would be taken up renewing existing laws; thereby reducing the time they can spend dreaming up new laws with which to help us.
