The reason I've chosen not to support the memorial Hanks is hawking, is because I do not believe
the WWII memorial should have to compete with the Lincoln memorial.

I am probably revealing my hillbilly origins from Oklahoma and Missouri...
but I always grew up thinking of the Iwo Jima statue as "the WWII memorial".
Only with the noise from Hanks, et al about a belated general memorial to WWII
did I realize that the Iwo Jima statue is viewed a "Marine Corps" memorial.

Maybe it's just because I grew up in the "afterward" of WWII, but I still don't quite see how
the teamwork, strength and sacrifice in the Iwo Jima statue could be topped by a new memorial.
Just my opinion...and I respect ones that would disagree with my position.

I agree with you on the Iwo Jima Statue. Most of the grand old county court houses also have memorials on them with marble stones listing the KIA from WWII.

A national memorial will be nice since new court houses have plaques on them honoring some "politition". A national monument would be permament.

It's not my place to say, since I didn't serve, but I have a hard time breaking things like Iwo Jima out into one branch of the service vs another. I don't intend any disrespect for the Marines or anyone else with regard to this commment. It's just that when it comes to spilling military blood for our nation, everyone's ranked together as far as I am concerned. Those who were drafted or simply volunteered to represent me and my family in battle have my deepest respect. And the Iwo Jima memorial taps my deepest respect for all who died in WWII.
