This is so very poignant to me, a child during WWII with many friends and family serving in that war.
There are so many stories of their years and old friendships that should be repeated to us today.
May God bless all those who served in this war.
I vividly remember their sacrifices so we might live in freedom, just as those serving today will be owed much.

Well I am not ashamed to say this brought some tears to my eyes.
It made me think of my shipmates long ago and wonder how they are.
I am in touch with a few of them.
Think I'll call them and wish them Merry Christmas.

Very cool story, WIMom!! Another special Christmas Mary!

This was a great story. When you think of all bad stuff that's happening to families lives. It's good to hear that there's still some good things happening too.
Thanks Snow Bunny and you too Wimom. Merry Christmas!

What a beautiful story. I had my husband read it - he was afraid to because I was crying when I told him he had to read it. He was also crying when he finished reading it.
What a wonderful story for Christmas.

Great story. It was "The Good War".
May we all live long enough to be reading similar stories from aging American soldiers
about how they were part of The Special Forces "Cavalry" that rode with the Northern
Alliance in Afghanistan when they tossed the Taliban and Al-Queda into the ash-heap of history!

Oh, stories of this sort should come with a "Protect Keyboard" alert.
So folks should know that it's probably a good idea to cover the keyboard with
plastic, in case of any tears.
This one gave me the nice, warm feeling...but I don't get away without a little "precipitation".

When you get your dads' pictures scanned, please send them to me, so that I can include them in a group with other veterans and post it at the Canteen and the Veteran's thread. Merry Christmas to you both!

Your cause is good and you are to be congratulated for your efforts. Thanks to your relentless pings, and though I had seen it many times before, I did finally visit your USO. It is indeed a warm and friendly place to take a break from fighting the endless battles we endure. Your service and your dedication is to be commended to the highest level above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks for all you remind us, and for your efforts in the here and now.
