I've been using MailWasher a couple of months and really like it. It can be registered for as $2.00. However, it fails to fully read some mail and will not delete some email. So for those (reads and deletes), I use
POP3 Scan Mail which is also freeware.
Both read email on the server, so you can delete before downloading potential virus infected attachments or spam emails.
