"...whatever happened to civility and the right for opposing views to be heard? Is booing not a civil liberty, first amendment right to free speech? It doesn't say anything about a right to be heard, it only says they have a right to speak. If I boo you, and no one can hear you, what crime have I committed? It may not be nice and civil-like, but it ain't iligil!

Lets be honest here. If we had a democrat on the oval office that speech would not have been given.

whatever happened to civility and the right for opposing views to be heard? It was lost in the rush to show that 'conservatives' can act just as stupidly and as childish as the worst of the leftist liberals.
To: SBeck
We all saw how hitlery acted during Bush's speech. Who would advocate that Bush act the same way toward her?
There's a time and place for 'in your face' tactics and vocal, even disruptive behavior, but this isn't one of them.
To: Eagle Eye
That is a crock. After the bullying tactics of the Clinton, and SoreLoserman people have a right and even an obligation to voice their opposition. This is exactly the time and exactly the place to confront these disgusting people. The college campus is where these people begin to train their little goon and hit squads to spread out all over America.

Seem to recall reading that shouting down speakers and disrupting meetings was a favorite tactic of the Nazis.
Who was it that said, "I might not agree with what you say, but I'll die defending your right to say it"?
I would like to think that if I didn't not agree with the speaker and felt strongly about it I would respond in a grown up manner and get up and walk out.

My question: whatever happened to civility and the right for opposing views to be heard?Where were you when liberal (i.e., Marxist) colleges shouted down conservative (i.e., mainstream) speakers?

You speak as if you were there and know exactly what this woman was saying. Were you there?
To: Gritty
Why do liberals seem to think an invitation to speak at a graduation is an opportunity to make political statements? IMHO, they should be making statements related to graduating and moving into the real world, instead of using it as a free opportunity to preach their garbage. I remember the numerous times X-42 used the same opportunity for political statements. I would have just walked out.

..."I might not agree with what you say, but I'll die defending your right to say it"?I dono, but whoever he or she was is full of bullcrap. I don't think history has ever recorded someone giving up their life to protect their opponents right to say nasty things about them.
C'mon, think about it... people say these kind of things to sound pious or what-not, but if it ever came to it, they'd really say, "what? are you nuts? I'm not going to sacrifice my life for that jerk!"

Lets be honest here. If we had a democrat on the oval office that speech would not have been given.I agree. In fact, the speech would more likely have been designed to excuse a Democrat President's tightening of "civil liberties" for non-citizens "in these unusual times" or some such thing.

But be advised, that Congress is taking your rights away in legislation such as the "Patriot" Act - That's a matter of opinion, isn't it?
That's why these folks were stomping their feet; they don't agree with the editor of the Sacramento Bee, or with you.

Some here may not agree with me but I think the crowd did the right thing. We must never forget Florida in 2000. For once, conservatives, Republicans and other Bush supporters spoke up and would not be cowed by the lying, dishonest RATS. We started rallies for Bush all over the country. Things like this were not done in the past. We shocked the RATS and we need to keep them shocked or they will roll over us just as they have before. We are in a battle on all levels and we must never again be silent. That's my opinion for whatever it's worth to others. I feel strongly about this.

Hey, I have an idea, try demanding a "right for differing opinions to be heard" in HER newspaper. Demand to right to respond to the leftist bias in HER newspaper. I'll bet you'll find out darn quick how much she cares about the "right to be heard".

What a shame to hear that about the Bee. I use the George Will archives linked there, but hadn't read any other pages. Oh, well.
To: SBeck
My question: whatever happened to civility and the right for opposing views to be heard? You only have a right to free speech. You do not have a right to be heard.
I have made my decision on these hot button issues. Most people have made their decision on this issue also. I don't know why these politicos need to spread their hot baked idiotic manure all over a graduation commencement. They can't help but spew BS. They do not know how to make or give an inspirational speech that would be appropriate for this occasion.
To: Gritty
This is good news! All these lefties have left to cling to is slander---when they invoke our "civil liberties" being "threatened" it's precisely because they want it to happen, not because they see any sign of its happening . They want to continue "speaking out against it" without it happening so that it will happen to them, and so that they can then say "SEE????WE TOLD YOU SO!! It's a dare and a provocation thrown directly into Ashcroft's face. This is the way Leftists have always thought and acted.
