Recently Congress, in the dead of night voted to authorize a pay raise for themselves to take effect. As I'm sure everyone is aware there is a precedent which allows a pay raise for Congress to take effect automatically ever year unless it's blocked by Congress.
While it might be understandable why some in Congress desire this raise, The question that pops into mind is is such a raise appropaite for the time we are in. After all we are in a recession right now and there is some uncertainty as to whether a congressional pay raise is appropaite.
Another question arises where will the money for this congressional pay raise come from. Will it be from an increase in taxes? What needs to be understood here is that their saleries come from our tax dollars. These people work for us, not the other way around. Some in Congress think that some of their constiuency have bottomless pockets of money, but that's not always the case. It seems like some in Congress have an addiction to money and power and don't seem to eager to get over this addiction anytime soon.
IMHO, the most appropaite course of action would be to send this raise to the treausery where it would contirbute to driving down the debt or better yet, to a charity that is reputable. Given that we are currently in a recession and are just now recovering from 9/11. I just don't think this was an appropaite time for Congress to give itself a pay raise.
