Reminds me of the report that Hilary Clinton, ever loathe to say the Pledge of Allegiance, allowed that she could say the Pledge after all -- but only to the America that can be, not to the one we've actually got (i.e., a constitutionally-based system of ordered liberty).
The biggest con game the Left plays is to say they want to give us a "perfect" society. It doesn't matter that Cuba tried, the former USSR tried, and PRC is trying -- and not a one of those bankrupt societies has produced anything worthy of human dignity, let alone was/is able to supply their people's wants and needs in peace and freedom and justice.
But just trust these Lefties anyhoot, and they'll deliver on their promises (eventually...oh, and plan to be real patient now!). They aren't interested in making gradual improvements, or small adaptations in the order of society to gradually "improve things"; NO. They want to wipe the slate clean and just start over, in the direction of their lunatic pipe dreams.... Opposition is not tolerated, and questions are forbidden to be asked. Just trust them.
As for me, I'm happy to settle for a good society -- like the one we've got, for all its "warts" and "blemishes." Especially when the so-called "perfect society" of the Left's dreams denies the most fundamental thing about human nature -- the love of and profound desire for Liberty. You can see it "on the ground" in the newly "liberated" people of Afghanistan. You can see it in oppressed peoples everywhere -- the yearning to break free of totalitarian planning and controls.
My husband observed that, post-9/11, the political Left in this country is "dead" -- they just don't know it yet. (I sure do hope he's right! He's very intuitive and perceptive as a rule....)
We'll have to make a point of letting the Left know that it's finally time for them to "get a life" by "getting off our backs" -- as often as possible. We don't need a pack of self-selected, deranged, antirational ideologues with a God complex running our lives for us, thank you very much.
